Community interpreting in medical institutions in Poland: the role of interpreter and new technologies in multilingual communication

Celem niniejszej pracy naukowej jest przedstawienie praktyk dotyczących tłumaczenia środowiskowego w Polskich placówkach medycznych z punktu widzenia personelu placówek – podejścia do pacjentów obcojęzycznych, aspektu tłumaczenia oraz tłumaczy środowiskowych a także roli nowych technologii jako narzędzia do komunikacji pomiędzy personelem medycznym a pacjentami. Część teoretyczna przedstawia dotychczasową wiedzę na temat tłumaczenia środowiskowego, roli tłumaczy i nowych technologii w tym obszarze oraz stan tłumaczenia środowiskowego medycznego w Polsce. Część praktyczna prezentuje wyniki badania ankietowego przeprowadzonego wśród pracowników Polskich placówek medycznych, które miało na celu zbadanie tego, jak personel komunikuje się z pacjentami obcojęzycznymi, postrzega potrzebę i rolę tłumacza środowiskowego oraz jakie znaczenie ma zastosowanie nowych technologii w tym obszarze.

The aim of the thesis is to present practices related to community interpreting in Polish medical facilities from the perspective of facility staff: their approach to foreign-language patients, the aspect of interpreting and community interpreters, as well as the role of new technologies as a tool for communication between medical personnel and patients. The theoretical part presents the current knowledge on community interpreting, the role of interpreters and new technologies in this area, and the state of medical community interpreting in Poland. The practical part presents the results of a survey conducted among employees of Polish medical facilities, which has aimed to examine how they communicate with foreign-language patients, perceive the need for and role of community interpreters, and the importance of the use of new technologies in this area.
