Translation of Slang Expressions in the Polish Subtitled Version of the Film “Rounders” by John Dahl

Niniejsza praca dotyczy tłumaczenia wyrażeń slangowych w polskiej wersji napisowej filmu „Rounders” w reżyserii Johna Dahla. Głównym celem pracy jest zbadanie częstotliwości stosowania poszczególnych technik tłumaczeniowych wykorzystywanych do przekładu slangu w tym filmie w oparciu o klasyfikację Garcarza (2007), ustalenie, czy tłumacz przyjął w swoim tłumaczeniu strategię udomowienia czy też egzotyzacji, a także ocena jakości przekładu wybranych wyrażeń pod względem ich naturalności, stosowności oraz ekwiwalentności. Praca podzielona jest na trzy rozdziały. Rozdział I stanowi wprowadzenie w dziedzinę tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, zawiera jego definicję, a także krótkie opisy najczęściej spotykanych metod realizacji przekładów multimedialnych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem podpisów. Rozdział II jest poświęcony slangowi, w szczególności jego licznym definicjom, najważniejszym cechom oraz pełnionym przez niego funkcjom. Ponadto rozdział ten zawiera omówienie technik stosowanych do tłumaczenia slangu opracowanych przez Garcarza, które stanowią podstawę analizy przeprowadzonej w części praktycznej pracy. Rozdział III rozpoczyna się opisem materiałów i metod wykorzystanych w badaniu, po czym następuje analiza ilościowa i jakościowa tłumaczenia wyrażeń slangowych w filmie. Na początku częstotliwość stosowania poszczególnych technik tłumaczeniowych została obliczona na podstawie korpusu 252 wyrażeń slangowych, które pojawiły się w filmie. Następnie zbadano jakość wybranych tłumaczeń, w niektórych przypadkach autor zaproponował też alternatywne tłumaczenie.

The present thesis concerns the translation of slang expressions in the Polish subtitled version of the American film “Rounders” by John Dahl. The main objective of the thesis is to analyse the incidence of particular techniques for translating slang in the film based on Garcarz's classification (2007), to establish whether the translator adopted the strategy of domestication or foreignization, and finally to evaluate the quality of selected translations in terms of their naturalness, aptness and equivalence. The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter I constitutes an introduction to the field of audiovisual translation (AVT), providing its definition as well as brief descriptions of the most common modes of audiovisual translation with a special focus on subtitling. Chapter II is dedicated to slang, in particular to its numerous definitions, properties and functions. Moreover, it outlines Garcarz’s techniques for translating slang, which form the basis of the analysis carried out in the practical part of the thesis. Finally, Chapter III begins with the description of materials and methods used in the study followed by a quantitative and qualitative analysis of translation of the slang expressions in the film. Firstly, the incidence of particular translation techniques is measured based on the corpus of 252 slang expressions that appear in the film. Then selected translations are evaluated in terms of quality with alternative renditions provided by the author in some cases.
