Proper Names in Translation on the basis of English and German Versions of Ostatnie życzenie by Andrzej Sapkowski

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona studiom translatorskim i podzielona jest na pięć rozdziałów opisujących specyfikę tłumaczenia, przekład nazw własnych i neologizmów. Przekłady fantastycznych nazw własnych w książce Ostatnie życzenie Andrzeja Sapkowskiego z języka polskiego na język angielski i niemiecki zostają przeanalizowane osobno, a następnie zestawione ze sobą dla porównania. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest ogólnej wiedzy o tłumaczeniu, roli tłumacza, językowi jako filtrowi rzeczywistości i przekładzie nazw własnych. Scharakteryzowano metody tłumaczeniowe, problemy i rozterki napotkane podczas przekładu. Ze względu na specyfikę tematu, rozdział drugi skupia się jedynie na książce Ostatnie życzenie i jej fabule oraz przybliża życiorys autora – Andrzeja Sapkowskiego. Rozdział trzeci jest głęboką analizą tłumaczenia nazw własnych i neologizmów z języka polskiego na język angielski. Rozdział czwarty jest poświęcony analizie przekładu na język niemiecki. Natomiast rozdział piąty zestawia ze sobą obydwa przekłady, pozwalając wychwycić różnice w procesach decyzyjnych tłumaczy oraz odmienne wizje rzeczywistości czytelników docelowych. Po zestawieniu ze sobą trzech wersji językowych nazw własnych, można zauważyć, że odbiór miejsc lub postaci może budzić różne odczucia i skojarzenia, pomimo tego, że bazują na tym samym terminie. Tłumacze starają się jednak sprostać wyzwaniu tłumaczenia idealnego. W zależności od przypadku, metoda tłumaczeniowa jest starannie dobrana i przemyślana, by przekład był jak najmniej stratny.

The thesis is devoted to translation studies and is divided into five chapters describing the specifics of translation, the translation of proper names and neologisms. The translations of fantastic proper names in the book Ostatnie życzenie by Andrzej Sapkowski from Polish into English and German are analysed separately and then compared. The first chapter is devoted to general knowledge about translation, the role of the translator, language as a filter of reality and the translation of proper names. Translation methods, problems and dilemmas encountered during translation are characterised. Due to the specific nature of the topic, the second chapter is focused only on the book Ostatnie życzenie and its plot and introduces the biography of the author, Andrzej Sapkowski. The third chapter is an in-depth analysis of the translation of proper names and neologisms from Polish into English. Chapter four is devoted to an analysis of the translation into German. Chapter five, on the other hand, compares the two translations, revealing the differences in the translators' decision-making processes and the different visions of reality of the target readers. After comparing the three language versions of proper names, it can be seen that the perception of places or characters can evoke different feelings and associations, despite being based on the same term. However, translators attempt to meet the challenge of perfect translation. Depending on the case, the translation method is carefully considered and adjusted to ensure that the translation is the most suitable.
