A comparative analysis of selected Polish translations of the Hobbit poems in J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings

Wiersze stanowią znaczną część świata Śródziemia przedstawionego przez Johna Ronalda Ruela Tolkiena w powieści „Władca Pierścieni”. Poezja nie tylko odgrywa istotną rolę w tworzeniu świata, ale jest przestrzenią ukazującą przemianę przedstawionych w powieści postaci, ma na nie widoczny wpływ, a także jest głęboko związana z opisywanymi wydarzeniami. Pożytecznym zatem wydaje się przyjrzenie się temu, jak poezja - kluczowy element rozumienia dzieła Tolkiena - był traktowany przez tłumaczy „Władcy Pierścieni” na język polski. Niniejsza praca analizuje strategie wybrane przez tłumaczy wierszy w dwóch popularnych polskich wydaniach „Władcy Pierścieni” i przygląda się im z różnych perspektyw. Analizowane aspekty to z jednej strony formalna struktura wierszy, między innymi: rodzaj i struktura rymów, a także rytmika osiągana przez liczbę sylab oraz metrum. Drugim istotnym elementem poddanym analizie jest wierność tłumaczenia oryginałowi pod względem zachowanych obrazów poetyckich i przekazu. Ponadto praca przygląda się spójności tłumaczenia z charakterem postaci, który wyrażany jest przez dany wiersz w oryginalnej wersji, a także zgodności przekładu i świata, w którym wiersz ma funkcjonować.

Poems constiute a substantial part of Middle-Earth, the world created by John Ronald Ruel Tolkien in his novel The Lord of the Rings. Not only does poetry play a vital role in the worldbuilding, but it also serves for depicting the changes in the characters presented in the story, it influences them and is profundly connected to the events described. Thus, it seems worthwhile to analyse the way in which this significant aspect for the understanding of Tolkien's work was treated by the translators of The Lord of the Rings into Polish. This paper analyses the strategies chosen by the translators of two popular editions of The Lord of the Rings and examines them from different perspectives. On one hand, the poems are analysed from their structural side, including rhyming, rhythmicity and meter. On the other hand, their faithfulness to the original is examined, taking into consideration the preservation of the imagery and meaning. Additionally, the paper inspects the preservation of the relation between the poem and the character by whom it is uttered and the correspondance of the translation with the world presented in the story.
