Describing characters in audio description. A comparative analysis of English, Polish and German audio description of the Netflix series “Bridgerton”

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza porównawcza opisów postaci w angielskiej, polskiej oraz niemieckiej audiodeskrypcji (AD), na przykładzie serialu kostiumowego produkcji Netfliksa pt. Bridgertonowie. Część teoretyczna obejmuje trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy z nich poświęcony jest pojęciu audiodeskrypcji, jej zastosowaniom, standardom tworzenia skryptów w Polsce, Stanach Zjednoczonych oraz Niemczech, a także scharakteryzowaniu grupy odbiorców. Rozdział drugi traktuje o elementach opisu AD. Autorka zwraca szczególną uwagę na sposoby wprowadzania i nazywania bohaterów, opisywania ich wyglądu, mowy ciała oraz kostiumów. W trzecim rozdziale poruszone zostaje zagadnienie tworzenia audiodeskrypcji do filmów zagranicznych i powiązanych z tym wyzwań. Rozdział czwarty poświęcony jest analizie porównawczej wybranych fragmentów skryptów audiodeskrypcji w języku angielskim, polskim i niemieckim. Badanie skupia się na trzech zasadniczych aspektach: wprowadzaniu i nazywaniu postaci, reprezentacji różnorodności oraz opisie kostiumów. Część praktyczną pracy wieńczą wnioski, w których wyraźnie zarysowują się różnice i podobieństwa pomiędzy wersjami językowymi audiodeskrypcji. Angielska i polska wersja w wielu przypadkach przedstawiają się jako ekwiwalentne, prezentują szczegółowe opisy bohaterów i uwidaczniają ich różnorodność. Niemiecki skrypt natomiast jest najbardziej skąpy pod względem detali i jedynie sporadycznie odzwierciedla zróżnicowaną obsadę, która, notabene, jest uznawana za cechę serialu Bridgertonowie, wyróżniającą go na tle innych produkcji kostiumowych.

The aim of this thesis is a comparative analysis of character description in English, Polish and German audio description (AD) on the basis of the Netflix period drama series Bridgerton. The theoretical part consists of three chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the definition of audio description, its applications, AD guidelines prevalent in Poland, the United States and Germany, as well as the target audience. Chapter 2 discusses the elements of audio description. The author draws particular attention to the methods of introducing and naming characters, describing their appearance, body language and costumes. The third chapter addresses the subject of creating audio description for foreign films and the challenges related to it. Chapter 4 is devoted to a comparative analysis of selected English, Polish and German AD excerpts. The study focuses on three main aspects: introducing and naming characters, the representation of diversity and costume description. It provided the author with a comprehensive overview of the methods utilised to portray characters in audio description. The conclusions at the end of the empirical part of this thesis highlight the differences and similarities between the analysed language versions of audio description. In numerous instances, English and Polish AD scripts appear comparable, offer detailed descriptions of characters and reflect their diversity. The German script, on the other hand, is the most scarce in terms of details and rarely mirrors the diverse cast, which, nota bene, is considered to be a distinctive feature of the Bridgerton series, differentiating it from other period pieces.
