The Development of Modern Spiritual Care: Insights from Religious Studies

Niniejsza praca podejmuję krytyczną analizę rozwoju współczesnej opieki duchowej, głównych wyzwań, przed jakimi stoi ona obecnie, oraz możliwych kierunków rozwoju w przyszłości, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jej integracji w placówkach opieki zdrowotnej. W początkowych rozdziałach podjęto próbę wyjaśnienia złożonych koncepcji religii, religijności i duchowości oraz uwypuklono ich zachodnie i chrześcijańskie uprzedzenia. Następnie przeanalizowano historyczne i religijno-kulturowe podstawy opieki duchowej w głównych religiach świata: chrześcijaństwie, islamie, hinduizmie i buddyzmie. W kolejnych rozdziałach pracy oceniono opiekę duchową w dzisiejszych scenariuszach opieki zdrowotnej, omawiając jej znaczenie, ewolucję od podejścia religijno-centrycznego do instytucjonalnego oraz liczne wyzwania, przed którymi stoi w praktyce. Ta część pracy zawiera krytyczną analizę popularnych modeli oceny duchowej, takich jak FICA, HOPE, SPIRITual i FAITH, oraz podkreśla ich wszechobecne zachodnie uprzedzenia i niezdolność do skutecznego uwzględnienia różnorodności potrzeb duchowych grup pacjentów religijnych i niereligijnych. Badanie kończy się analizą jogi jako kompleksowego, holistycznego i uniwersalnego paradygmatu opieki duchowej oraz dogłębną dyskusją na temat jej ogromnego bogactwa filozoficznego, możliwości dostosowania do różnych metod leczenia oraz wyjątkowej zdolności do zapewnienia integracyjnej opieki duchowej w scenariuszach opieki zdrowotnej.

The present study undertakes a critical analysis of the evolution of modern spiritual care, the dominant challenges it is facing today and possible future directions, with an explicit focal point on the integration of inclusive frameworks in healthcare settings. The initial chapters attempt to clarify the highly complex conceptual foundations of religion, religiosity and spirituality, and bring to the fore their embedded Western and Christian orientations. This is followed by an examination of the historical and religio-cultural foundations of spiritual care in the major world religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Subsequent chapters of the thesis evaluate spiritual care in today’s healthcare scenarios, discussing its significance, evolution from religio-centric to institutional approaches, and the many challenges it encounters in operationalisation. This part includes a critical discourse analysis of representative spiritual assessment models like FICA, HOPE, SPIRITual and FAITH, and highlights their pervasive Western orientations and failure in efficient coverage of the diversity in spiritual needs of religiosity and non-religiosity-based patient groups. The study concludes by examining Yoga as a thorough, holistically-based and universally relevant paradigm in spiritual care and discusses in depth its immense depth in philosophical richness, treatment adaptability and unique capacity to provide inclusive spiritual cover in healthcare scenarios. The dissertation concludes with reflective insights and recommendations towards refining approaches to spiritual care.
