This thesis examines Polish-Spanish relations during the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, as well as the ways in which the conflict was reported by the Polish press. It provides a detailed account of Spain’s economic and political relations and developments from the beginning of the nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on the processes that constituted the indirect and direct causes of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The thesis also examines the attitude of the Polish authorities towards the parties to the conflict, based on reports produced by Polish intelligence. The analysis of the Polish press covers three nationwide daily newspapers: Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny, Robotnik, and Mały Dziennik. The study of the Polish media focuses on the ways in which the parties to the conflict, their allies, and the external assistance they received were portrayed.
The examined media indicate that the Spanish Civil War was used instrumentally both by the press and by the Polish authorities, primarily for domestic purposes. At the same time, the analysis demonstrates a duality in Polish policy, which sought to maximize Warsaw’s material and strategic benefits. This thesis examines Polish-Spanish relations during the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, as well as the ways in which the conflict was reported by the Polish press.
