Analysis of Humor in Audiovisual Translation: A Study Based on Subtitles in Desperate Housewives (Season 1)

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza strategii i technik tłumaczenia humoru w napisach do pierwszego sezonu amerykańskiego serialu „Gotowe na wszystko” („Desperate Housewives”), a także określenie, które z nich były najczęściej wykorzystywane przez tłumacza w przekładzie humoru z języka angielskiego na polski. Dodatkowo, analiza pozwoli określić, jaki rodzaj humoru najczęściej pojawia się w dialogach, a tłumaczenia tych dialogów zostaną ocenione z perspektywy odbiorcy. W celu przeprowadzenia tej analizy i zapoznania się z tematem pracy, w pierwszych dwóch rozdziałach opisane zostały definicje, teorie, typologie i wyzwania tłumaczenia, tłumaczenia audiowizualnego oraz humoru. Główną częścią pracy jest jednak analiza, której dokonano w rozdziale trzecim. W części teoretycznej kluczową rolę odgrywa podrozdział zawierający szczegółowy podział i opis metod tłumaczenia humoru w przekładzie audiowizualnym. W ramach badań przeprowadzono szczegółową analizę strategii i technik tłumaczeniowych zastosowanych w wybranych scenach zawierających dowcipy, grę słów, ironię, czy też humorystyczne odniesienia kulturowe. Zrobiono to poprzez porównawczą analizę tekstową, zestawiając oryginalne dialogi z ich tłumaczeniami w celu wskazania zastosowanych strategii i technik przekładu.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the strategies and techniques used in translating humor in the subtitles of the first season of the American television series Desperate Housewives, and to identify which of these were most frequently employed by the translator in rendering humor from English into Polish. Additionally, the analysis seeks to determine the most common types of humor appearing in the dialogues, and the translations of these dialogues are evaluated from the viewer’s perspective. In order to carry out this analysis and provide context for the study, the first two chapters present definitions, theories, typologies, and challenges related to translation, audiovisual translation, and humor. The core of the thesis, however, is the analysis conducted in Chapter Three. Within the theoretical framework, a key role is played by the subsection that offers a detailed classification and description of translation methods used for humor in audiovisual texts. As part of the research, a detailed analysis was conducted on selected scenes featuring jokes, wordplay, irony, or culturally specific humorous references. This was done through comparative textual analysis, juxtaposing the original dialogues with their translations to identify the translation strategies and techniques used.
