Winter blooms of blue-green algae appearing in lakes of the temperate zone are an increasingly frequent result of climate change. The impact of such blooms on the ecosystem of a small lake partially stratified in the summer was analyzed. It turned out that the functioning of the lake ecosystem in winter translates into seasonal succession of the ecosystem in spring and summer. The bloom effectively binds all the mineral forms of nutrients appearing in the epilimnion in winter into organic matter. The lack of mineral forms of nutrients limits the bloom of "spring" algae, which, combined with the restrictions imposed by the ongoing, massive cyanobacterial bloom, prevents the growth of the zooplankton population. Permanent bloom also limits the growth of submerged macrophytes and fish pressure on zooplankton. Termination and sedimentation of “winter” bloom remove nutrients and easily decomposable organic matter from the euphotic zone, resulting in a relatively good condition of the ecosystem in summer. Although the presented model of the impact of winter blooms on the seasonal succession of lakes is based on data from one study and may not be fully universal, our data suggest that the impact of such phenomena on the functioning of lake ecosystems is significant and should be taken into account in planning their protection and reclamation.
