Seventeenth-century French diplomacy was built upon the foundations of the culture of politeness, transforming the social codes of the royal court into genuine instruments of political practice. Drawing in particular on the works of ambassadors and theorists of diplomacy such as François de Callières and Abraham de Wicquefort, this study examines the functioning of these diplomatic practices. Through the concepts of propriety (convenance) and the golden mean (juste milieu), the diplomat is required to demonstrate constant adaptability and strategic empathy in order to reconcile the interests of sovereigns. Under the guise of an “honourable spy,” the diplomat controls both emotions and speech in accordance with the principle of ratio governing oratio, thereby safeguarding state secrets. In conclusion, this culture of conversation demonstrates that diplomatic form and diplomatic function are inseparable in ensuring the effectiveness of negotiations.
