Analysis of Polish Translation of the Novel The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest stylistyce amerykańskiej powieści The Crying of Lot 49 autorstwa Thomasa Pynchona i jej polskiego tłumaczenia 49 idzie pod młotek pióra Piotra Siemiona. Analiza ma ujawnić najbardziej wyraźne cechy stylistyczne tekstu źródłowego i sprawdzić, czy te cechy są obecne w tekście docelowym. Ponadto, praca skupia się na niepowtarzalnych cechach stylistycznych powieści i największych problemach, które można napotkać przy jej tłumaczeniu. W pierwszej części omawia się takie pojęcia teoretyczne jak styl, cecha stylistyczna, nieprzekładalność i inne. Rozpatrzone zostały dwa klasyczne podejścia do analizy stylistycznej. Dużo uwagi poświęcono kryteriom analizy stylistycznej i kategoriom zastosowanym w analizie. Praca porusza zagadnienie nieprzekładalności i sposobu, w jaki ona ujawnia się w tekście źródłowym. W części praktycznej odpowiednie fragmenty tekstu źródłowego i polskiego przekładu są porównywane i analizowane pod kątem stylistyki. W analizie zastosowano osiem ogólnych kategorii, każda z których stanowi cechę stylistyczną powieści. Analiza ujawnia, że nie wszystkie cechy stylistyczne tekstu źródłowego zostały odzwierciedlone w tekście docelowym. Oddanie niektórych cech stylistycznych powieści w tłumaczeniu jest niemożliwe ze względu na, między innymi, niepowtarzalny charakter stylu autora, strukturalne i pojęciowe różnice pomiędzy językiem źródłowym a docelowym oraz wysoka wartość estetyczna tekstu źródłowego, która przejawia się we współwystępowaniu wielu różnorodnych cech stylistycznych.

The present work explores the stylistic aspects of the American novel The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon and its Polish translation under the title 49 idzie pod młotek by Piotr Siemion. The analysis seeks to identify the most distinct stylistic features of the ST and to see if and how they were rendered in the TT. One of the aims is to identify what factors contribute to the idiosyncratic character of Pynchon’s style and what the main translation challenges in Lot 49 are. The first part discusses such theoretical concepts as style, a stylistic feature, untranslatability and others. Two classical approaches to stylistic analysis are looked at. A lot of attention is dedicated to the issue of criteria for stylistic analysis and potential analysis categories. The concept of untranslatability is also dealt with and it is shown how it is manifested in the ST. In the practical part the portions of the ST and the TT are analyzed under the angle of stylistic features in eight groups. The analysis shows that some of the stylistic aspects of the ST were not reflected in the TT. The main reasons for it are the idiosyncratic character of the author’s style, structural and conceptual differences between the SL and the TL and the high aesthetic value of the novel, realized through convergence and proliferation of stylistic features.
