Wordplay in Polish and English Subtitles of Season 3 of the Series A Series of Unfortunate Events

Po pierwsze, rozdziały od I do III dotyczą teorii związanej z badaniem. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest translatoryce. Zawiera definicję translatoryki, rodzaje przekładu według Jakobsona i podział translatoryki. Ponadto opisuje proces tłumaczenia, badania nad procesem tłumaczeń, granice przekładalności i ocenianie jakości przekładu. Rozdział drugi opisuje gry słowne i definicje gier słownych, osoby biorące udział w procesie tworzenia gier słownych, funkcje gier słownych jak również różne rodzaje gier słownych. Rozdział trzeci dotyczy technik tłumaczeniowych i zawiera definicje i opisy różnych rodzajów strategii tłumaczeniowych. Ponadto, rozdział III opisuje strategie tłumaczeniowe i metody tłumaczenia według Vinaya i Darbelneta jak również strategie tłumaczeniowe w kontekście tłumaczenia gier słownych. Po części teoretycznej, kolejne części poświęcone są praktycznemu wymiarowi badania, tak więc przykładom gier słownych znalezionym w Serii Niefortunnych Zdarzeń. Część ta podzielona jest na metodologię, wyniki i dyskusję. Część dotycząca wyników poświęcona jest badaniu rodzajów gier słownych i technik tłumaczeniowych użytych w ich tłumaczeniu w polskich napisach serialu. Przedstawione są przykłady częściej występujących rodzajów gier słownych, takich jak aliteracja, homonimia, zbitki wyrazowe, backronimy i gry słowne dotycząca wyrażeń frazeologicznych. Przeważające oraz istotne techniki tłumaczeniowe użyte w tłumaczeniu zidentyfikowanych przykładów gier słownych opisane są w podobny sposób. Należą do nich strata, modulacja, tłumaczenie dosłowne, transpozycja, zysk i kompensacja. Co więcej, porównane jest występowanie gier słownych w tekście j1 i tekście j2. Na końcu podane są zapisy bibliograficzne.

To begin with, the chapters I to III concern the theoretical background of the research. The first chapter is dedicated to translation studies. It includes the definition of translation studies, categories of translation according to Jakobson and the division of translation studies. Moreover it describes the translation process, translation process research, the limitations of translation and assessing the quality of translation. The second chapter describes wordplay and definitions of wordplay, persons participating in wordplay, functions of wordplay as well different techniques of wordplay. The third chapter concerns the topic of translation techniques and includes the definitions and different types of translation strategies. Moreover, chapter III describes strategies and procedures of translation according to Vinay and Darbelnet as well as translation techniques in the context of translation of wordplay. After the theoretical section, the following parts are dedicated to the practical aspect of the research, that is to the instances of wordplay found in A Series Of Unfortunate Events. This part is divided into Methodology, Results and Discussion. The Results section includes the exploration of wordplay techniques and translation techniques applied in their translation in the Polish subtitles of the show. The instances of more frequent wordplay techniques, such as alliteration, homonymy, portmanteau words, backronyms and play on phraseological elements are presented. Most prevalent and important techniques of translation used in the translation of identified instances of wordplay are described in a similar manner. Those include loss, modulation, literal translation, transposition, gain and compensation. What is more, the presence of wordplay in the ST and TT is compared. Finally, the references are provided.
