Korespondencja jako źródło do badania sfery publicznej. Dawid Cassius i Jednota braci czeskich w katolickiej Rzeczypospolitej

Przedmiotem pracy jest system komunikacji w Jednocie braci czeskich w pierwszej połowie XVIII w. Analiza struktur Jednoty z perspektywy obiegu informacji pozwoliła uchwycić funkcjonowanie tej wspólnoty w sferach publicznych Rzeczypospolitej i międzynarodowego kalwinizmu. Inspirując się modelem przedstawionym przez Jürgena Habermasa w fundamentalnej pracy Strukturalne przeobrażenia sfery publicznej, ukazano Jednotę jako strukturę kształtującą opinię publiczną wewnątrz swojej organizacji i poza nią. Źródłem dającym wgląd w te procesy jest korespondencja znajdująca się w Aktach Braci Czeskich w Archiwum Państwowym w Poznaniu. Ponieważ list z jednej strony był narzędziem administracji, ale z drugiej – sprzyjał też budowaniu osobistych więzi między korespondentami, przenikały się w nim sfery prywatna i publiczna. Aby adekwatnie scharakteryzować Jednotę jako strukturę tworzącą sferę publiczną, z zasobów Archiwum Braci Czeskich wybrano korespondencję Dawida Cassiusa (1673–1734), który jako senior Jednoty braci czeskich, odgrywał kluczową rolę w procesach komunikacyjnych i opiniotwórczych. Kluczowe w teorii Habermasa rozróżnienie sfer politycznej, publicznej i prywatnej starano się ująć poprzez rozróżnienie ról społecznych Cassiusa, który został przedstawiony jako duchowny, polityk (w tym kontekście ukazano jego działania ireniczne) oraz głowa rodziny i członek wspólnoty. Pokazano, że Cassius mimo braku praw politycznych aktywnie uczestniczył w polityce, broniąc kościoła. Jednota znajdowała się wówczas na obrzeżach sfery publicznej Rzeczypospolitej. Choć wyrażała swoje postulaty, były one nieakceptowalne dla szlacheckiej opinii publicznej i dlatego nie mogły być zrealizowane.

The subject of the study is the system of communication in the Unity of the Bohemian Brethren in the first half of the eighteenth century. The analysis of Unity's structures from the perspective of the circulation of information made it possible to grasp the functioning of this community in the public spheres of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and international Calvinism. Taking inspiration from the model presented by Jürgen Habermas in his fundamental work Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere, Unity is portrayed as a structure that shapes public opinion inside its organization and outside it. A source that gives insight into these processes is the correspondence located in the Bohemian Brethren Acts at the State Archive in Poznań. On the one hand, the letter was a tool of administration, but on the other - it also fostered personal bonds between correspondents, with the private and public spheres intermingling. In order to adequately characterize the Unity as a structure that created a public sphere, the correspondence of David Cassius (1673-1734) was selected from the resources of the Bohemian Brethren Archives. He was senior of the Unity of Bohemian Brethren and played a key role in communication and opinion processes. The distinction between political, public and private spheres, which is key in Habermas' theory was attempted to be captured by distinguishing the social roles of Cassius, who was portrayed as a clergyman, politician (in this context his irenic actions were shown) as well as a head of the family and a member of the community. It was demonstrated that Cassius, despite his lack of political rights, actively participated in politics, defending the church. The unity was at the time on the periphery of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's public sphere. Although expressed its demands, they were unacceptable to the nobility's public opinion and therefore could not be implemented.
