Abstrakt (EN)
Hiacynt Przetocki was a Catholic poet and preacher appreciated during his lifetime (17th century), which was due in part to the publication of several of his works written in Polish and Latin. Among them are sermons intended for a Polish audience. One of the characteristic features of these speeches is the frequent reference to painting, sculpture, music, and architecture. Przetocki’ s preaching strategy relied on strengthening the didactic message through parallels that connected dogmatic or moral issues with vivid metaphors and comparisons drawn from various fields of art. Thanks to this, he was able to present abstract ideas in a somewhat „tangible” way, making use of the interplay between word and image, while also referring to customs associated with funeral rites („pompa funebris”). In Przetocki’ s works, knowledge of the principles of creating artistic or musical works becomes a vehicle for parenetic content, but also provides an opportunity to recognize the context in which the speech was delivered.
