Conceptual blending as a tool of creating aspects of a fantastic universe in fantasy literature. A cognitive linguistic study of selected examples

Niniejsza praca skupia się na roli integracji pojęciowej w tworzeniu aspektów literatury fantasy. Teoretyczna część pracy obejmuje ogólną charakteryzację pojęcia integracji pojęciowej i amalgamatu pojęciowego na podstawie teorii przedstawionej przez Gillesa Fauconniera oraz Marka Turnera. Opisuje ona również podstawowe procesy i terminy związane z powstawaniem amalgamatów pojęciowych, m.in.. przestrzenie mentalne, kompozycje, elaborację i uzupełnianie. Integracja pojęciowa przedstawiona jest również jako narzędzie stosowane przez twórców fikcji, reżyserów filmowych i twórców gier do tworzenia nowatorskich oraz wiarygodnych scenariuszy, a także realistycznych postaci w świecie fantasy. Część analityczna skupia się na analizie konstruowania postaci czarodziejów i potworów, na przykładach z Władcy Pierścieni Tolkiena oraz Wiedźmina Sapkowskiego. Postacie Gandalfa i Yennefer oraz Kikimory i Sheloby omówione są jako przykłady amalgamatów w kontekście integracji pojęciowej, ukazując, że proces ten jest narzędziem kształtującym świat przedstawiony i pozwalającym na tworzenie nieznanych konceptów, które zachowują spójność z logiką fikcyjnego świata. Praca kończy się podsumowaniem i wnioskami podkreślającymi rolę amalgamatów pojęciowych w tworzeniu nowatorskich schematów i idei.

This thesis focuses on the role of conceptual integration in the creation of aspects in fantasy literature. The theoretical part of the work includes a general characterization of the concepts of conceptual integration and conceptual blending based on the theory presented by Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner. It also describes fundamental processes and terms related to the formation of conceptual blends, including mental spaces, composition, elaboration, and completion. Conceptual integration is presented as a tool used by fiction creators, filmmakers, and game developers to generate innovative and credible scenarios, as well as realistic characters in the fantasy world. The analytical part focuses on the analysis of constructing wizard and monster characters, using examples from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Sapkowski's The Witcher. Characters such as Gandalf and Yennefer, as well as Kikimore and Shelob, are discussed as examples of conceptual blends in the context of conceptual integration, illustrating that this process is a tool shaping the world created by these authors and allowing the creation of unfamiliar concepts that maintain coherence with the logic of the fictional world. The thesis concludes with a summary and conclusions emphasizing the role of conceptual blends in the creation of innovative patterns and ideas.
