The use of mediation techniques and poetically-inspired works of art as a tool for simplifying interpretation of poetry, developing reading comprehension and communication skills in English language acquisition

Poniższe badanie ukazuje w jaki sposób użycie technik mediacyjnych, takich jak interpretacja tekstu oraz tłumaczenie, oraz tekstów kultury zainspirowanych poezją ułatwia proces interpretacji poezji, przy okazji rozwijając umiejętności czytania ze zrozumieniem oraz komunikacji podczas nauki języka angielskiego. Praca odpowiada na trzy pytania badawcze: Czy techniki mediacji i korzystanie z tekstów kultury inspirowanych poezją pomagają upraszczać interpretację poezji? Czy interpretacja tekstów kultury inspirowanych poezją jest łatwiejsza niż interpretacja utworów poetyckich? W jakim stopniu kombinacja technik mediacyjnych oraz tekstów kultury zainspirowanych poezją wpływa na rozwój umiejętności czytania ze zrozumieniem oraz komunikacji?. Materiały, które zostały użyte podczas badania składają się z tekstów poetyckich oraz piosenek zainspirowanych poezją. Pierwszy rozdział teoretyczny przedstawia pojęcie mediacji oraz w jaki sposób jest używana podczas akwizycji języka obcego. Zawarte w nim definicje mediacji oraz dwóch umiejętności językowych uzasadnia wybór dwóch technik mediacyjnych oraz wzbogaca ich definicje. Drugi rozdział prezentuje krótką historię powstania poezji oraz tekstów kultury zainspirowanych poezją. Skupia się przede wszystkim na muzyce, konkretnie na dwóch gatunkach: rocku gotyckim oraz metalu symfonicznym, opisując okoliczności ich powstania, charakterystykę oraz piosenki, które zostały użyte na potrzebę tego badania. Trzeci rozdział jest skupiony na badaniu w formie studium przypadku. Bada ono jaki wpływ mają teksty kultury inspirowane poezją na interpretację samej poezji, co jest podparte użyciem dwóch technik: interpretacji oraz tłumaczenia. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone na trzech dorosłych uczestnikach z minimalnym poziomem znajomości językowej A2+. Uczniowie wzięli udział w serii lekcji, które najpierw omawiały utwór muzyczny zainspirowany poezją, a następnie przedstawiały ten utwór poetycki. By zebrać wyniki badania, uczestnicy byli obserwowani przez nauczyciela podczas zajęć, by następnie nauczyciel mógł wypełnić arkusz obserwacyjny. Na zakończenie badania, uczniowie wypełnili arkusze samooceny, oceniając w ten sposób swój postęp. Badanie dowiodło, że użycie technik mediacyjnych, takich jak interpretacja i tłumaczenie, oraz tekstów kultury zainspirowanych poezją jest skuteczną metodą by uprościć interpretację poezji oraz rozwinąć umiejętności czytania ze zrozumieniem i komunikacji.

This research paper studies the use of mediation techniques and poetically inspired works of art as a tool for simplifying interpretation of poetry, developing reading comprehension and communication skills in English language acquisition. The work answers three research questions: Do mediation techniques and using poetically-inspired works of art help to simplify the interpretation of poetry? Is the interpretation of poetically-inspired works of art easier than interpreting poetry which was an inspiration for those works? To what extent does the combination of mediation techniques and poetically-inspired art influence the development of reading comprehension and communication skills?. The materials that are used for this study are poems and poetically-inspired songs. The first theoretical chapter presents mediation, and how it is used in second language acquisition. The main purpose of using mediation is developing two language skills: reading comprehension and communication skills. The chapter contains definitions of language skills, along with the definitions of mediation and two techniques. The second chapter presents the definition and brief history of poetry, including also forms of art which are inspired by poetry. The chapter presents music genres: gothic rock and symphonic metal, and poetically-inspired songs that are used in the research. The third chapter focuses on the research in the form of a case study. This study examines the impact interpretation of poetically-inspired works of art has on the interpretation of poetry. The study is supported by the use of mediation techniques: interpretation and translation. It is conducted on three adult learners with a minimum language proficiency level A2+ and is focused on developing their reading comprehension and communication skills. The students participate in a series of lessons that first introduce them to the poetically-inspired songs. Then, the poetry that inspired the mentioned works of art is presented. The lessons are focused on the process of translating the unknown words to simplify the process of interpreting the texts. To collect the results, the participants are observed during every lesson, and the observation charts are completed by the teacher. At the end of the study, students are asked to fill self-assessment grids where they assess the impact of mediation techniques on the processes of interpretation. The study shows that mediation techniques and poetically-inspired works of art are effective for interpreting poetry and developing reading comprehension and communication skills.
