Teacher perspectives on using popular characters in EFL textbooks for primary school: a survey

W tym badaniu przedstawiono perspektywy nauczycieli dotyczące wykorzystywania popularnych postaci, takich jak postacie Disneya, w podręcznikach dla szkoły podstawowej oraz ich wpływ na zaangażowanie uczniów i wyniki nauczania. Badanie ma na celu zbadanie, czy włączenie kultury popularnej przyczynia się do lepszych wyników nauczania u uczniów szkół podstawowych. Badania na ten temat polegały na ustaleniu kryteriów, które decydują o skuteczności podręcznika do nauki języka angielskiego jako obcego, porównaniu nowoczesnego podręcznika ze starszym, a także na uwzględnieniu odpowiednich teorii psychologicznych, które mogą wyjaśniać skuteczne elementy podręcznika oraz efektywność tych nowoczesnych podręczników według nauczycieli języka angielskiego pracujących z dziećmi w szkole podstawowej w Polsce. Według nauczycieli, którzy odpowiedzieli na ankietę wysłaną w ramach tego badania, wraz z wprowadzeniem podręcznika My Disney Stars and Heroes, wystąpiła poprawa wyników nauczania, większa współpraca uczniów, a opanowanie materiału przez uczniów wzrosło. Większość nauczycieli, którzy korzystają z tego podręcznika, zaleciła również szersze użycie podręczników tego typu w programie nauczania.

This study shows teachers’ perspectives on using popular characters, such as Disney characters, in textbooks for primary education, and their impact on student engagement and learning outcomes. The research investigates whether the incorporation of popular culture contributes to better learning outcomes in primary school students. Research on the topic consisted of establishing the criteria for what makes an effective English as a foreign language (EFL) textbook, comparing a modern textbook to an older one, alongside relevant psychological theories that might explain the effective elements of a textbook and the effectiveness of these new style textbooks according to EFL teachers for primary school aged children in Poland. According to the teachers that responded to the survey sent out as a part of this study, with the introduction of the My Disney Stars and Heroes textbook, student improvement in learning outcomes, student collaboration, and student mastery of the material have all increased. The majority of teachers who use this textbook have also recommended broader adoption of textbooks like this in the curriculum.
