Wieloryby w tradycji religijnej Japonii

W pracy przedstawiono kult wielorybów w tradycji religijnej Japonii. Omówiony został stosunek Japończyków do wielorybów będący wynikiem wpływu religii shintō i buddyzmu oraz rozwoju wielorybnictwa w niektórych regionach. W szczególności zwrócono uwagę na różnice między społecznościami wielorybniczymi a mieszkańcami innych regionów Japonii w podejściu do śmierci tych zwierząt. Opisano przekazy o snach, w których wieloryby prosiły o nie zabijanie ich i wiarę ludności w konsekwencje pozbawienia je życia. Wyjaśnione zostały przyczyny rozwinięcia się kultu pogrzebowego dla wielorybów oraz takich praktyk, jak nadanie imienia pośmiertnego wielorybom, wystawienie im tabliczki pośmiertnej i wpisanie do rejestru zmarłych. Ukazano formy materialnego upamiętnienia wielorybów: nagrobki, pomniki, tabliczki i formy unikalne dla regionu. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona ceremoniom żałobnym odprawianym w intencji wielorybów cyklicznie oraz inne rytuały a także unikatowe festyny, które odbywają się w miejscowościach związanych z wielorybnictwem.

The paper presents the cult of whales in the religious tradition of Japan. It discusses the Japanese attitude towards whales due to the influence of Shinto and Buddhism, as well as the development of whaling in certain regions. Particular attention is given to the differences between whaling communities and the inhabitants of other regions of Japan in their approach to the death of these animals. The paper describes accounts of dreams in which whales pleaded not to be killed and the people's belief in the consequences of taking their lives. The reasons for developing the funeral cult for whales are explained, along with practices such as giving posthumous names to whales, placing memorial tablets for them, and entering them into registers of the deceased. The material forms of commemorating whales are shown: tombstones, monuments, tablets, and forms unique to the region. Special attention is devoted to mourning ceremonies performed for whales regularly, as well as other rituals and unique festivals held in towns associated with whaling.
