Die Vergangenheit bleibt immer mit uns. Die Frauenperspektive und Erinnerung an die DDR anhand des Romans von Jenny Erpenbeck „Kairos“

Niniejsza praca koncentruje się na analizie wybranych zagadnień powieści ,,Kairos”, której autorką jest Jenny Erpenbeck. Podejmuje ona problematykę roli pamięci w kształtowaniu doświadczeń bohaterów, a także identyfikuje jej różne formy obecne w utworze. Istotnym aspektem rozważań jest również ukazanie kobiecej perspektywy na tle realiów społeczno-politycznych Niemieckiej Republiki Demokratycznej. W części teoretycznej omówiono rozwój memory studies oraz kluczowe koncepcje dotyczące pamięci, stanowiące podstawę dalszych analiz. Następnie przedstawiono sytuację społeczeństwa NRD, uwzględniając warunki życia codziennego, położenie kobiet oraz wpływ systemu politycznego na funkcjonowanie jednostek. Istotnym elementem tej części pracy jest również charakterystyka działalności Stasi. W kolejnym rozdziale przedstawiono natomiast życiorys autorki, czyli Jenny Erpenbeck oraz najważniejsze motywy jej twórczości. Natomiast główna część pracy obejmuje analizę powieści ,,Kairos” w perspektywie memory studies. Interpretacja wybranych fragmentów pozwoliła wskazać różne formy pamięci oraz ich wpływ na sposób postrzegania rzeczywistości przez bohaterów. Zwrócono także uwagę na obraz kobiety w NRD oraz obecne w utworze mechanizmy przemocy i manipulacji w relacjach. Przeprowadzona analiza potwierdza, że pamięć stanowi jeden z kluczowych elementów powieści, wpływając zarówno na rozwój postaci, jak i sposób przedstawienia rzeczywistości historycznej i społecznej. Na końcu pracy omówione zostały wnioski oraz przedstawione propozycje dalszych badań nad powieścią ,,Kairos”.

This thesis focuses on the analysis of selected aspects of the novel ,,Kairos” by Jenny Erpenbeck. It addresses the role of memory in shaping the characters’ experiences and identifies its various forms present in the work. An important aspect of the discussion is also the representation of the female perspective against the backdrop of the socio-political realities of the German Democratic Republic. The theoretical part outlines the development of memory studies and key concepts related to memory, which form the foundation for the subsequent analysis. It then presents the situation of society in the GDR, taking into account everyday living conditions, the position of women, and the influence of the political system on individual functioning. A significant element of this section is also the characterization of the activities of the Stasi. The following chapter presents the biography of Jenny Erpenbeck and the main motifs of her literary work. The main part of the thesis consists of an analysis of the novel ,,Kairos” within the framework of memory studies. The interpretation of selected passages makes it possible to identify different forms of memory and their influence on the characters’ perception of reality. Attention is also given to the representation of women in the GDR, as well as the mechanisms of violence and manipulation in interpersonal relationships depicted in the novel. The analysis confirms that memory is one of the key elements of the novel, influencing both the development of the characters and the representation of historical and social reality. The thesis concludes with a summary of findings and suggestions for further research on the novel ,,Kairos”.

Die vorliegende Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Analyse ausgewählter Aspekte des Romans ,,Kairos”, dessen Autorin Jenny Erpenbeck ist. Sie befasst sich mit der Rolle der Erinnerung bei der Gestaltung der Erfahrungen der Figuren und identifiziert zudem verschiedene im Werk vorhandene Formen von Erinnerung. Ein wesentlicher Aspekt der Untersuchung ist außerdem die Darstellung der weiblichen Perspektive vor dem Hintergrund der gesellschaftlich-politischen Realitäten der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik. Im theoretischen Teil wird die Entwicklung der Memory Studies sowie zentrale erinnerungstheoretische Konzepte erläutert, die die Grundlage der weiteren Analyse bilden. Anschließend wird die Situation der Gesellschaft in der DDR dargestellt, wobei insbesondere die Lebensbedingungen im Alltag, die Stellung der Frauen sowie der Einfluss des politischen Systems auf das Funktionieren des Einzelnen berücksichtigt werden. Ein weiterer wichtiger Bestandteil dieses Kapitels ist die Charakterisierung der Tätigkeit der Stasi. Im folgenden Kapitel wird die Biografie der Autorin Jenny Erpenbeck vorgestellt sowie die wichtigsten Motive ihres literarischen Schaffens herausgearbeitet. Der Hauptteil der Arbeit umfasst die Analyse des Romans ,,Kairos” im Kontext der Memory Studies. Die Interpretation ausgewählter Textstellen ermöglicht es, verschiedene Formen von Erinnerung sowie deren Einfluss auf die Wahrnehmung der Realität durch die Figuren aufzuzeigen. Zudem wird das Frauenbild in der DDR sowie die im Roman dargestellten Mechanismen von Gewalt und Manipulation in zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen untersucht. Die durchgeführte Analyse bestätigt, dass Erinnerung eines der zentralen Elemente des Romans darstellt und sowohl die Entwicklung der Figuren als auch die Darstellung historischer und gesellschaftlicher Realität maßgeblich beeinflusst. Die Arbeit schließt mit einer Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse sowie Vorschlägen für weitere Forschungsansätze zum Roman ,,Kairos”.
