This Correspondence, in response to an article published by Niederberger and co-workers (ChemPlusChem 2016, 81, 935–940), comments on misleading conclusions of the authors of that paper regarding the fate of the aqueous methanesulfonic acid electrolyte during photoelectrolysis performed using the WO3 photoanode. It is shown that the suggested formation of the acid dimer is in striking contrast with numerous literature reports.
