Selected aspects of legal translation in the Polish version of the series The Suits

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest zbadanie, czy istnieją różnice w strategiach i technikach tłumaczeniowych między polską wersją lektorską a polskimi napisami w tłumaczeniu terminów prawnych w amerykańskim serialu The Suits. Praca sprawdza również, czy ewentualne różnice mogą mieć wpływ na odbiór serialu przez widownie polską. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi kompleksowe przedstawienie aspektów związanych z tłumaczeniem audiowizualnym, w tym jego problematyki oraz charakterystyki analizowanych rodzajów przekładu audiowizualnego. Drugi rozdział wprowadza czytelnika w zawiłości języka prawnego, omawiając jego zastosowanie w serialach oraz filmach, przedstawia główne różnice między polskim a amerykańskim systemem prawnym oraz charakteryzuje strategie i techniki tłumaczeniowe stosowane w tłumaczeniu terminów prawnych. Trzeci rozdział stanowi analizę wybranych terminów prawnych z serialu The Suits, które w tłumaczeniu na język polski mogą być wyzwaniem dla tłumacza ze względu na nieprzystawalność terminologii prawnej języka źródłowego i docelowego. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazuje, że różnice w strategiach i technikach tłumaczeniowych nie zależą od rodzaju tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, a brak kompetencji tłumaczy może przyczynić się do zniekształcenia obrazu systemu prawnego języka źródłowego.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether there are differences in translation strategies and techniques between Polish voiceover and Polish subtitles in the translation of legal terms in the American series The Suits. The work also examines whether these differences can affect the reception of the series by the Polish audience. The first chapter is a comprehensive analysis of the aspects of audiovisual translation, discussing the complexity of this field and the characteristics of the types of audiovisual translation analyzed. The second chapter introduces the reader to the intricacies of legal language, considering its role in TV series and films. It also presents the main differences between the Polish and American legal systems while also characterizing the translation strategies and techniques employed in translating legal terms. The third chapter conducts an analysis of selected legal terms from the series The Suits. It examines terms that, when translated into Polish, can be a challenge for the translator due to the incongruity of legal terminology between the source and target languages. The analysis proves that the different translation strategies and techniques are not determined by the type of audiovisual translation and the lack of translators' expertise can contribute to a distorted picture of the legal system of the source language.
