The university and its place: higher educational topology in the context of digitalization

Przedmiotem niniejszej rozprawy jest odpowiedź na pytanie o fenomen miejsca/doświadczenie umiejscowienia Uniwersytetu w kontekście cyfryzacji, to znaczy o relację pomiędzy topologicznym charakterem Uniwersytetu a procesami ucyfrowienia, przez które przechodzą instytucje szkolnictwa wyższego. Traktując pandemiczny okres akademickiej pracy zdalnej jako pewnego rodzaju punkt zwrotny i punkt wyjścia do refleksji, podejmuję próbę rozważenia tego czy można rozumieć Uniwersytet w oderwaniu od miejsca i doświadczenia umiejscowienia. Nie ograniczając się do metaforycznego sensu mówienia o „miejscu Uniwersytetu” (na przykład w znaczeniu roli jaką odgrywa w społeczeństwie), obiektem mojego pytania jest dosłownie miejsce Uniwersytetu i miejsce jakim jest Uniwersytet. Jednocześnie dosłowność ta nie prowadzi do rozpatrywania tego zagadnienia z perspektywy nauk empirycznych takich jak architektura, budownictwo i nie oznacza redukcji ani uproszczenia rozumienia pojęcia miejsca do samej tylko fizycznej struktury o względnej trwałości, lecz stara się interpretować miejsce jako złożony fenomen zrozumiały na własnych warunkach.

The subject of this dissertation is the answer to the question about the phenomenon of place/experience of place(fulness) of the University in the context of digitalization, i.e., the relationship between the topological character of the University and the digitalization processes that higher education institutions are undergoing. Taking the COVID-19 pandemic period of remote academic work as a kind of turning and starting point for reflection, I attempt to consider whether the University can be understood in isolation from place and the experience of location. Rather than restricting the scope to a metaphorical sense of talking about the “place of the University” (for example, in terms of the role it plays in society), the object of my question is literally the place(s) of the University and the place that the University is. At the same time, this literalness does not lead to considering this issue from the perspective of empirical sciences such as architecture and construction, nor does it mean reducing or simplifying the understanding of the concept of place to a physical structure of relative permanence, but rather attempts to interpret place as a complex phenomenon understandable on its own terms.
