This article discusses the theory of photographic image in Jacques Derrida’s philosophy. According to Derrida, the photography is of a spectral nature. This means that in a photographic image different temporal orders are interwoven and that the experience of photography is intrinsically anachronistic. What is important in such characteristics is that the nature of photography is best described by the hiatus: discontinuity, interruption or the suspension of what Roland Barthes called the Referent. As a reference without the Referent photographic image links together the visible and invisible as the ghost-like appearance of what went by; the past, present and future as a promise of testimony; the perception and technology as a mnemotechnic archive or an “effect of reality.”
