“They looked down on her, and she looked up through them”: Understanding Fallen Women through Paratextuality in John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Its Film Adaptation

Celem pracy jest omówienie reinterpretacji wiktoriańskiej kobiety upadłej, w oparciu o teorie paratekstualności oraz adaptacji. Przedmiotem analizy jest nieodłączność występowania aspektów paratekstualnych (w powieści w formie mott przed każdym rozdziałem, a w filmie w postaci akcji adaptacji powieści) w reinterpretacji Sary Woodruff, kobiety upadłej, głównej bohaterki neo-wiktoriańskiej powieści Kochanica Francuza (1969), autorstwa Johna Fowlesa oraz jej ekranizacji o tym samym tytule (1981) w reżyserii Karla Reicha. Praca bada nieodłączność aspektów paratekstualnych i ich kluczowy wpływ na reinterpretację dziewiętnastowiecznej kobiecej seksualności poprzez pryzmat przenikania i nakładania się kolejnych warstw paratekstualnych zarówno w powieści jak i analogicznej do niej filmowej adaptacji nakręconej w konwencji filmu w filmie. Praca powołuje się na źródła omawiające zagadnienia adaptacji, charakterystyki kobiety upadłej, seksualności w epoce wiktoriańskiej, oraz korzysta z neo-wiktoriańskiego terminu reinterpretacji. This paper aims to discuss the reinterpretation of the Victorian fallen woman figure, based on theories of paratextuality and adaptation. The subject of the analysis is the inseparability of paratextual aspects (in the novel in the form of epigraphs before each chapter, and in the film in the form of the plot of the novel’s adaptation) in the reinterpretation of Sarah Woodruff – the main character of the neo-Victorian novel The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969), written by John Fowles and its film adaptation under the same title (1981) directed by Karl Reich. The paper examines the inseparability of paratextual aspects and their influence on the reinterpretation of nineteenth-century female sexuality through the processes of permeation and overlapping of the plots in both, the novel and its analogous film adaptation made as a film within a film. The paper refers to sources discussing the issues of adaptation, the characterization of the fallen woman, sexuality in the Victorian era, and uses the neo-Victorian term of reinterpretation. The figure in question – Sarah Woodruff, assumes new faces, creating a complex and multidimensional portrait of a fallen woman with every added layer of the text
