O Anglii dobrze i źle. Anglia lat 90. XVI wieku w oczach obcokrajowców

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona analizie wizerunku Anglii w oczach cudzoziemców odwiedzających ów kraj u schyłku XVI wieku. Głównym celem badawczym była rekonstrukcja obrazu państwa angielskiego na podstawie wybranych relacji poselskich oraz dzienników z lat 90. XVI stulecia. Analizie poddano trzy teksty źródłowe: relację z poselstwa Pawła Działyńskiego, relację z podróży Fryderyka I z Wirtembergii oraz dziennik Paula Hentznera. W pracy podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, jakie elementy rzeczywistości państwa angielskiego doby elżbietańskiej przyciągały uwagę przybyszów oraz w jaki sposób były przez nich postrzegane. Analiza treści źródeł pozwoliła wyróżnić trzy główne obszary zainteresowań autorów: zagadnienia dotyczące społeczeństwa, postać królowej oraz Anglię jako państwo. Przeprowadzona analiza dowodzi, że obraz państwa Elżbiety I był niejednoznaczny- Anglię przedstawiano zarówno pozytywnie, jak i negatywnie. Sposób postrzegania kraju oraz zakres zainteresowań autorów były w dużym stopniu uzależnione od samego podróżnika: celów jego wyprawy, poglądów oraz wyznawanej religii. Część z odnotowanych spostrzeżeń autorów źródeł ma charakter neutralny, jednak stanowią istotny element niniejszej pracy, ponieważ sam fakt uwzględnienia określonych zagadnień świadczy o tym, że autorzy uznawali je za ważne i warte odnotowania.

This paper examines the image of England as perceived by foreigners visiting the country at the end of the sixteenth century. The main aim of the study was to reconstruct the image of the English state on the basis of selected diplomatic accounts and travel journals from the 1590s. The analysis is based on three sources: the account of the embassy of Paweł Działyński, the travel account of Frederick I of Württemberg, and the travel journal of Paul Hentzner. The paper seeks to identify which aspects of Elizabethan England attracted the attention of foreign visitors and how these aspects were perceived. The analysis of the sources made it possible to distinguish three principal areas of interest: English society, the figure of Queen Elizabeth I, and England as a state. The findings demonstrate that the image of Elizabethan England was complex and multifaceted, presenting both favourable and critical assessments of the country. The perception of England, as well as the range of issues discussed by the authors, depended largely on the travellers themselves, including the purpose of their journey, their personal views, and their religious affiliation. Although some of the observations recorded in the sources are descriptive and value-neutral, they constitute an important part of the analysis, as the very fact that these issues were noted indicates that the authors considered them significant and worthy of attention.
