Child’s Speech in Audiovisual Translation. A Multimodal Analysis of Subtitles in the Movie Poor Things (2023)

Praca magisterska poświęcona jest omówieniu strategii przekładu mowy dziecięcej w tłumaczeniu audiowizualnym w oparciu o założenia przekładoznawstwa, psycholingwistyki i teorii multimodalności. Mowa dziecięca jest złożonym systemem komunikacji, charakteryzującym się cechami typowymi dla kolejnych etapów akwizycji, które są nierozerwalnie połączone z rozwojem poznawczym, emocjonalnym oraz społecznym dziecka. Poniższa praca opisuje, w jaki sposób cechy języka dziecka przedstawione są w polskich napisach w filmie Biedne istoty (2023) i przedstawia techniki tłumaczeniowe wykorzystane, by przełożyć silnie nacechowany stylistycznie i gramatycznie język głównej bohaterki, Belli Baxter. W pracy przyjęto perspektywę multimodalną oraz zwrócono szczególną uwagę na interakcje pomiędzy warstwą audialną a wizualną filmu oraz ich wpływ na interpretację napisów. Wyniki analizy wskazują na złożoność procesu tłumaczenia mowy dziecięcej, która wymaga od tłumacza szczególnej wrażliwości na zachowanie jej specyfiki językowej, stanowiącej istotny element konstruujący znaczenie filmu. Ponadto praca ukazuje znaczenie analizy przekładu audiowizualnego w kontekście znaków dźwiękowych i wizualnych, które uczestniczą w odbiorze tłumaczenia i mogą kompensować modyfikacje będące wynikiem procesu przekładu,

The thesis investigates the rendition of child language in Audiovisual Translation, drawing on Translation Studies, psycholinguistics and the Theory of Multimodality. A child's speech is a complex communicative system characterised by features typical of the subsequent stages of acquisition, inevitably connected to the cognitive, emotional, and social development of a child. This study examines how such features of speech are rendered in the subtitling of the movie Poor Things (2023) and presents the techniques used to translate the linguistic marking, which is an important narrative device used to characterise the main heroine, Bella Baxter. Adopting a multimodal framework, the thesis explores the interactions between the visual and auditory modes that influence the understanding of the subtitles. The findings highlight the complexity of the task of translating the language of a child character, which requires the translator's sensitivity to the preservation of linguistic specificity of the speech, as it constitutes a vital element of meaning construction within the film. Moreover, the thesis demonstrates the importance of analysing Audiovisual Translation in the context of the visual and auditory cues that can compensate for modifications introduced in the translation.
