This study analyzes the portrayal of holidays and festive celebrations in the 19th-century humorous and satirical press. It proceeds from the premise that holidays were a crucial element organizing the rhythm of social life, and their unique nature fostered an intensification of behaviors, emotions, and social customs. Particular attention is paid to how these phenomena were perceived and commented upon by the creators of humorous and satirical periodicals; employing a concise and synthetic approach, these publications focused on sharply highlighting key social vices. The study draws primarily on two major periodicals published in the Kingdom of Poland: Mucha and Kolce. Both literary texts and illustrations were analyzed, with a focus on the interplay between the linguistic and visual elements. The aim was to identify the key themes present in holiday depictions, determine the sources of the humor, and describe the techniques employed by the satirists. Special attention was given to issues such as holiday preparations, family relations, consumption, gluttony, poverty and social exclusion, as well as the role of stereotypes. The findings indicate that, in the analyzed press, holidays serve not merely as a backdrop for events but as a significant point of reference for reflecting on 19th-century society. They are portrayed as a time of contradictions—characterized on the one hand by community and tradition, and on the other by tension, conflict, and excess. These themes are conveyed through the depiction of specific comic situations—particularly within the realms of interpersonal relationships and domestic life—and through the creation of vivid character archetypes.
