Th is study presents the results of a survey conducted among 70 Polish secondary school graduates, fi rst year students of English Philology. It includes their views on learning writing in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for high-stakes school-leaving examinations, their perceptions of the exam writing task, and their refl ections on the usefulness of the knowledge and skills gained in their further education. Th e results indicate that the consequence of the standardized assessment is negative washback eff ect in teaching English-language writing.
