Planning in Research: History of Art – What Should the Status Quo be around 1985? Abstract During the period of the Polish People’s Republic, a centrally planned economy was in operation. The strategy applied to industrial production was also in place in the case of research. The article analyses the plan for the development of art history as a research discipline which was prepared in the early 1970s by Prof. Jan Białostocki as a part of the work of the Art Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The time horizon of predictions and planned activities in the field of the history of art (teaching, research, art education) was set circa 1985, and may even have lasted until the early 1990s. After all these years, the Professor’s hypotheses may be compared to what actually happened in the field of development in which he had planned and predicted.
