The thesis focuses on the master–student relationship as one of the significant forms of transmitting the musical traditions of the Kozła Region. Its aim is to analyse the transformations of this relationship, from traditional, informal musical transmission, through the institutionalisation of education, to its contemporary forms. Particular attention is given to the relationship between maintaining the continuity of tradition and changes in the ways musical knowledge is transmitted.
The thesis presents the specific characteristics of the Kozła Region and the significance of its musical traditions. It discusses the traditional model of learning, based primarily on direct contact, listening, observation, imitation, and practical participation in music-making. Family relationships and the local community played an important role in this process, while transmission encompassed not only repertoire but also performance techniques and knowledge of local melodic variants.
The next part of the thesis examines the institutionalisation of musical transmission using music education in Zbąszyń as an example. Particular attention is given to the work of Antoni Janiszewski and the development of the Music Centre, later the State Primary Music School named after Stanisław Moniuszko. The inclusion of traditional instruments in the educational system created a space in which direct performance-based transmission was combined with the structure of institutional education. The school and the Association of Folk Musicians also performed documentary, artistic, and popularising functions.
The final part focuses on the contemporary master–student relationship, analysed on the basis of field research and interviews. The contemporary model combines traditional methods, such as demonstration, listening, and playing music together, with elements of institutional education, musical notation, and the use of recordings and digital technologies. The relationship between teacher and student becomes more collaborative, while the student gains greater freedom to choose repertoire independently and to develop an individual approach to performance.
The analysis indicates that the contemporary master–student relationship is neither a straightforward continuation of the traditional model nor its complete opposite. It combines elements of traditional transmission with institutional solutions and contemporary technologies. The continuity of tradition therefore does not require the preservation of a single, unchanging model of learning. More important is maintaining a relationship in which the performer’s experience can be transmitted to subsequent generations and further developed under new conditions
