Metaphor and metonymy in multimodal discourse. Case studies of selected artworks by Magdalena Abakanowicz and satirical cartoons by Paweł Kuczyński.

Celem rozprawy jest badanie komunikacyjnej roli mechanizmów kognitywnych takich jak metafora i metonimia w interpretacji komunikatów wizualnych i ustno-wizualnych w kulturze Zachodu, wyrażonych przez dwa gatunki: sztukę i rysunki satyryczne. Staram się zbadać w jaki sposób procesy kognitywne pozwalają zrozumieć znaczenie następujących dzieł: dwóch instalacji figuralnych i jednej płaskorzeźby stworzonych przez słynną polską artystkę Magdalenę Abakanowicz, oraz czterech rysunków satyrycznych polskiego grafika Pawła Kuczyńskiego. Pomimo rosnącej liczby wnikliwych badań potencjału procesów kognitywnych w analizie modalności poza sferą językową (Mittelberg and Waugh 2009; Mittelberg 2014; Müller 2008; Forceville 1996, 2007, 2008, 2009; Górska 2010, 2014; Zbikowski 2009), sztuce, a szczególnie sztuce rzeźbiarskiej, wciąż poświęca się niewiele uwagi. W rozprawie badam zastosowanie ujęcia multimodalnego w analizie dzieł ustno-wizualnych, koncentrując się jak zestawienie modalności ustnej i wizualnej przyczynia się do różnych, często nieoczekiwanych interpretacji. Dysertacja jest również poświęcona analizom semantycznym czterech tematycznie powiązanych rysunków satyrycznych Pawła Kuczyńskiego, obszaru badań prowadzonych z powodzeniem przez różnych badaczy kognitywnych (El Refaie 2009, Forceville 2014). Koncentruję się na znaczeniu rysunków satyrycznych i badam mechanizmy poznawcze które są zastosowane w ich interpretacjach aby zilustrować niekorzystne zmiany we współczesnych trendach komunikacji masowej. Badam w jaki sposób myślenie metaforyczne i metonimiczne ułatwia proces konstruowania znaczenia, oraz jakie czynniki determinują różne interpretacje badanych kompozycji ustno-wizualnych. W pracy analizowana jest również rola elementów tekstowych w procesie tworzenia znaczeń, oraz w jakim zakresie informacja wyrażona poprzez modalność słowną może rozwinąć znaczenie kompozycji wizualnej i wpłynąć na konceptualizacje. Rozprawa bazuje na modelu metafory multimodalnej Charlesa Forceville'a (1996, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013) i opiera się na teorii metafory pojęciowej (Lakoff i Johnson 1980, 1999). Dyskusja koncentruje się wokół konceptualnego potencjału metafory i metonimii w materiale wizualnym i ustno-wizualnym oraz ich funkcji komunikacyjnej w procesie konstruowania znaczeń. Relacje pojęciowe które łączą kompozycje wizualne z elementami tekstowymi analizowane są na podstawie trzech dzieł Magdaleny Abakanowicz i czterech rysunków satyrycznych Pawła Kuczyńskiego. Rozprawa składa się z sześciu rozdziałów. Rozdział 1 zawiera teoretyczny wstęp dotyczący wybranych narzędzi kognitywnych które są istotne w analizie danych w kolejnych rozdziałach. W rozdziałach 2-5 analizowane są dzieła sztuki i rysunki satyryczne. Rozdział 6 zawiera podsumowanie badań.

The objective of the dissertation is to investigate the communicative role of cognitive devices such as metaphor and metonymy in the interpretation of visual and verbo-visual messages in Western culture expressed by two genres: art and satirical cartoons. I attempt to examine how the conceptual processes allow to gain insights into the meaning of the following works: two figural installations and one relief created by a renowned Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz, and four satirical cartoons by a Polish cartoonist Paweł Kuczyński. Although a growing number of studies have insightfully examined the potential of cognitive mechanisms in modalities outside the verbal realm (Mittelberg and Waugh 2009; Mittelberg 2014; Müller 2008; Forceville 1996, 2007, 2008, 2009; Górska 2010, 2014; Zbikowski 2009), the sphere of art, in particular, sculpture, has still been paid little attention. In this study, I investigate the relevance of the multimodal approach in the analysis of verbo-visual works, focusing on how a juxtaposition of the verbal and the visual modality results in various, often unexpected, interpretations. The dissertation is also dedicated to semantic analyses of four thematically related satirical cartoons by Paweł Kuczyński, the area of research which has been successfully studied by various cognitive scholars (El Refaie 2009; Forceville 2014). In my study, I concentrate on the meaning of four satirical cartoons, and I examine the cognitive mechanisms which are employed in their interpretations to illustrate adverse changes in the contemporary trends in mass communication. I study how metaphorical and metonymic reasoning facilitates the process of meaning construction, and which factors determine multiple readings of the verbo-visual compositions. The study also aims to explore the role of textual elements in the process of meaning creation, and the extent to which information expressed via the verbal modality may elaborate the visual composition and affect conceptualisations. The dissertation is anchored in the multimodal framework by Charles Forceville (1996, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013), and grounded on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980, 1999). The discussion concentrates on the conceptual potential of metaphor and metonymy in the visual and verbo-visual material, and their communicative function in the process of meaning construction. The conceptual relations that bind visual compositions with textual elements are examined on the basis of three artworks by Magdalena Abakanowicz and four satirical cartoons by Paweł Kuczyński. The dissertation is structured in six chapters. Chapter 1 provides a theoretical overview and addresses selected cognitive tools which are relevant in the data analyses in the following chapters. In chapters 2-5 the artworks and cartoons are analyzed. Chapter 6 provides a summary of the analyses.
