Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza porównawcza tłumaczenia nazw własnych w książce J. K. Rowling „Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” oraz jej francuskiego tłumaczenia „Harry Potter à l’école des sorciers” autorstwa Jean-François Ménarda.

The objective of this thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of the translation of proper names in J. K. Rowling’s book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and its French translation “Harry Potter à l’école des sorciers” by Jean-François Ménard. The thesis is structured into two parts: a theoretical section and an analytical section. The first chapter of the theoretical part contains both a description of the series and information about the author, as well as aspects that contribute to the global popularity of the series. The next chapter is devoted to children’s literature – its definition and translation strategies – including terms such as foreignization, domestication, and cultural differences. The third chapter discusses proper names and their definition, with particular emphasis on translation techniques and the translation of proper names in children’s literature. The analytical part focuses on a comparative analysis of selected proper names such as the title, the name of the school, the names of the houses, and the names of individual characters. The analysis is carried out at the level of etymology, meaning and, in some cases, pronunciation of the proper names. In certain instances, the French translation is compared with the Polish one to enrich the analysis. The final part of the thesis outlines the conclusions drawn from the comparative analysis.
