O wielofunkcyjności czternastowiecznych rzeźb „jasełkowych” w klasztorze Klarysek w Krakowie

Artykuł ma na celu analizę funkcji rzeźb, przedstawiających siedzące postacie Marii i Józefa w krakowskim klasztorze Klarysek. Punktem wyjścia do analizy jest osiemnastowieczny przekaz, opisujący praktyki pobożności w starosądeckim klasztorze Zakonu św. Klary, związane z odgrywaniem za pomocą figur wydarzeń, przywoływanych w okresie świąt Bożego Narodzenia. Nowożytne źródło, informujące o przypuszczalnie wówczas już „starodawnych” obyczajach pomoże nam w lepszym rozumieniu kształtu figur, w pewnym sensie pochodnego ich funkcji. Szczegółowa analiza schematu kompozycyjnego rzeźb, a w szczególności układu rąk pozwoli także na postawienie hipotezy o dalszych funkcjach, po nadaniu których, przedstawienia te można było przenieść z ram narracyjnych do sfery reprezentacji treści ponadczasowych.

This article analyses the functions of the sculptures depicting sitting figures of St. Mary and St Joseph from the Poor Clares monastery in Cracow. The study is based on an 18th century account which describes religious practices in the monastery of Poor Clares in Stary Sącz (Poland) that involved using figures to reenact events commemorated during Christmas. This early modern source, recording customs which most likely were already ‘ancient’ at the time of its writing, will help further current understanding of the shape and structure of the analyzed figures, which in a way derives from their function. Detailed analysis of the figures’ composition, particularly of the positioning of their hands, will also make it possible to formulate hypothesis regarding functions which were given to these plays so that their role could be expanded from a traditional narrative framework to presenting timeless themes and content.
