On Marxist, Structuralist, Postmodern, and Existential Motifs in the Works of Jack Kerouac: An Attempt at Literary Criticism

Praca pochyla się nad twórczością prozatorską Jacka Kerouaca – amerykańskiego pisarza zaliczanego do nurtu szeroko rozumianego postmodernizmu i jednego z głównych reprezentantów pokolenia Beat Generation. Analizuję głównie jego relację z doświadczeniem przeżywania własnego życia. W kolejnych częściach skupiam się na innych aspektach tego doświadczenia. Rozpoczynam od relacji ze wspomnieniami oraz z teraźniejszością przechodząc do struktury postrzegania czasu, a na koniec do wpływu zewnętrznej rzeczywistości na indywidualne doświadczenie. Całość argumentu przeprowadzonego w pracy ma mieć charakter wynikania jednego aspektu z drugiego, prowadzącego do coraz bardziej szczegółowej charakteryzacji i unikalności tego doświadczenia. Wprowadzone zostają pojęcia „sentymentalizmu” oraz „sentymentalizmu marksistowskiego”. Poszukiwanie definicji dla tych pojęć jest centralną osią pracy, na której opiera się próba zrozumienia prozy autora.

This dissertation delves into the prose work of Jack Kerouac, an American writer associated with the broadly defined postmodernist movement and a key figure of the Beat Generation. The primary focus of the study is his relationship with the lived experience of his own life. Subsequent sections explore other dimensions of this experience, starting with his engagement with memories and the present moment, transitioning to the structure of his perception of time, and concluding with the impact of external reality on individual experience. The overall argument aims for a cumulative effect, with each aspect leading into the next, thereby resulting in a more nuanced and unique characterization of this experience. The study introduces the concepts of “sentimentalism” and “Marxist sentimentalism.” The quest for definitions of these terms serves as the central axis of the dissertation, providing the foundation for understanding Kerouac’s prose.
