Gender-Neutral Language in English-Polish Translation. Illustrated with an Analysis of the Polish Subtitles and Voice-Over of Selected English-Language TV Series

Niniejsza praca bada wyzwania i strategie tłumaczenia języka neutralnego płciowo z angielskiego na polski, koncentrując się na reprezentacji postaci niebinarnych w wybranych amerykańskich i brytyjskich serialach telewizyjnych. Badanie podkreśla znaczenie inkluzywnego języka w szanowaniu tożsamości osób niebinarnych. Analiza obejmuje polskie napisy, dubbingi oraz opracowania lektorskie seriali takich jak Sowi Dom, She-Ra i Księżniczki Mocy, Star Trek: Następne pokolenie, Dobry Omen, Steven Universe, Sandman, Degrassi: Nowy rocznik, One Day at a Time, Mistrzowie Metalu, Sex Education, Billions, Craig znad Potoku, Fallout, Nasza bandera znaczy śmierć, Chirurdzy oraz Good Trouble. Wyniki badania ujawniają znaczące trudności w tłumaczeniu języka neutralnego płciowo na polski z powodu jego nacechowanej płciowo struktury. W znacznej części analizowanych tłumaczeń niebinarna tożsamość płciowa postaci została pominięta w tłumaczeniu. W większości przypadków tłumacz zdecydował się na porzucenie konwencji niebinarnej postaci i wprowadzenie binarnych form językowych, jednocześnie umniejszając reprezentację osób niebinarnych przez wybrany serial. Praca omawia trudności w tłumaczeniu niebinarnych form językowych, w tym uprzedzenia kulturowe oraz brak ustalonych neutralnych płciowo zaimków w języku polskim. Innowacyjne formy i nowo utworzone terminy bywają używane w tłumaczeniu, jednak nadal nie są powszechnie rozpoznawane. Pomimo widocznych starań, niebinarne formy językowe nadal stanową znaczne wyzwanie dla tłumaczy. Często wynikające z powodu braku standardu tłumaczenia bądź niewiedzy tłumacza. Zalecane jest opracowanie i standaryzacja zaimków neutralnych płciowo w języku polskim, szkolenie tłumaczy oraz zachęcanie do używania innowacyjnych form językowych w celu polepszenia reprezentacji tożsamości niebinarnych oraz dążenia do znormalizowania wspomnianych form w codziennym języku.

This paper examines the challenges and strategies of translating gender-neutral language from English into Polish, focusing on the representation of non-binary characters in selected American and British television series. The study highlights the importance of inclusive language in respecting the identities of non-binary individuals. The analysis encompasses Polish subtitles, dubbing, and voice-over adaptations of series such as The Owl House, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Good Omens, Steven Universe, The Sandman, Degrassi: Next Class, One Day at a Time, Metal Shop Masters, Sex Education, Billions, Craig of the Creek, Fallout, Our Flag Means Death, Grey's Anatomy, and Good Trouble. The study's findings reveal significant difficulties in translating gender-neutral language into Polish due to its gendered structure. In a substantial portion of the analyzed translations, the non-binary gender identity of characters was omitted, thereby diminishing the representation of non-binary individuals portrayed by the respective series. The paper discusses the challenges of translating non-binary language forms, including cultural biases and the lack of established gender-neutral pronouns in Polish. While innovative forms and newly coined terms are sometimes used in translations, they are still not widely recognized. Despite evident efforts, non-binary language forms continue to pose a significant challenge for translators, often due to the absence of translation standards or translators' unfamiliarity with the concepts. The paper recommends the development and standardization of gender-neutral pronouns in Polish, training for translators, and the encouragement of using innovative language forms to improve the representation of non-binary identities and to normalize these forms in everyday language.
