Hell’s Kitchen Language: An Analysis of Colloquial and Criminal Slang in the Polish Subtitles of the American Series Daredevil
Abstrakt (PL)
Praca poświęcona jest tłumaczeniu języka potocznego i elementów slangu przestępczego w polskich napisach do serialu “Daredevil”. Celem pracy jest zbadanie, jak poprzez tłumaczenie przekształcone zostają nieformalne wypowiedzi na język polski. Część teoretyczna zawiera definicje języka potocznego, slangu i wulgaryzmów.

This work is devoted to translation of colloquial language and criminal slang to the Polish subtitles of the TV series – Daredevil. The aim of the work is to demonstrate how through the translation we can transfer informal and varied speech of different characters to Polish language. The theoretical section includes definitions of colloquial language, slang, and profanity. It also provides information on audiovisual translation and subtitles. Descriptions of translation strategies—such as loanwords, calques, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation—developed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) and Baker (2011), are also presented in this work. The practical section analyzes the translation into Polish of dialogue excerpts taken from the first two seasons of the series. In many situations, the translator prefers colloquial or vulgar words to ensure that the translated sentence sounds natural and clear. As a result, the reader can more easily understand the context of the utterance, but at the same time, the expressiveness of the sentence is lost. There are also passages where the original style of speech is preserved. This study shows that translating colloquial language requires taking into account many factors, such as the meaning of a word, its tone, its function in the sentence, or the context.
