Differences and similarities in French and Polish translation strategies regarding the register and culture-bound items. A comparison of the canonical French and Polish translations of Lucy M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables published in 1986 and 1994

Celem niniejszej pracy jest określenie różnic i podobieństw między polskim tłumaczeniem Anne of Green Gables pochodzącym z 1994 r., którego autorką jest Rozalia Bernsteinowa oraz francuskim kanonicznym przekładem autorstwa Henriego-Dominique’a Paratte’a z 1986 r. poprzez porównanie obu tłumaczeń pod kątem elementów kulturowych, nazw własnych oraz rejestru. Niniejsza praca składa się z dwóch części. We wstępie do pracy przedstawiono informacje dotyczące autorów wybranych tłumaczeń oraz historię powstawania tłumaczeń Anne of Green Gables w polskim oraz francuskim kręgu językowym. Pierwsza część, która obejmuje rozdział pierwszy, przedstawia teorie związane ze strategiami tłumaczeniowymi i technikami, które zostaną wykorzystane przy analizie tłumaczeń. Druga część składa się z trzech rozdziałów praktycznych. Rozdział drugi zawiera opisy porównań tłumaczeń elementów kulturowych. W rozdziale trzecim omówiono kwestię nazw własnych w obu tłumaczeniach, a w rozdziale czwartym — rejestru. Ostatni rozdział przedstawia wyniki analizy oraz informacje dotyczące możliwości zastosowania niniejszego badania.

The aim of this thesis is to establish the differences and similarities between the Polish canonical translations of Anne of Green Gables from 1994 by Rozalia Bernsteinowa and the French one by Henri-Dominique Paratte, which was created in 1986. The analysis compares these two translations in terms of their handling of culture-bound items, proper names and the register. The introduction to the thesis presents information concerning the authors of analyzed translations and a brief history of translations of Anne of Green Gables in Poland and French-speaking countries. Following the introduction, the thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part, which consists of the first chapter, provides theoretical frameworks for the analysis described in the following chapters. The second part consists of three practical chapters. The second chapter discusses the case of culture-bound items. The third chapter is dedicated to proper names while the fourth chapter provides the analysis of the register. The final chapter of this thesis encompasses the results of the study along with its perspectives for further research.
