The Changes of Symbolism of the Letter ‘A’ from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter in the Movie Adaptation Easy A and its Polish Translation

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie zmian w symbolice szkarłatnej litery „A” w powieści Nathaniela Hawthorne’a „Szkarłatna litera” oraz jej współczesnej adaptacji filmowej „Łatwa dziewczyna”. Porównując kluczowe aspekty obu dzieł, analiza koncentruje się na tym, jak znaczenie litery „A” ewoluuje w różnych kontekstach kulturowych i czasowych. Praca składa się z dwóch rozdziałów, wstępu oraz konkluzji. Rozdział pierwszy opisuje ramy teoretyczne, omawiając amerykański romantyzm i jego europejskie korzenie, a także tematy symboliki, krytyki feministycznej, teorii tłumaczenia i adaptacji. Rozdział drugi oferuje analityczne porównanie, koncentrując się na znaczeniu szkarłatnej litery w powieści i filmie. Porusza również kwestie dotyczące wyzwań tłumaczenia audiowizualnego z języka angielskiego na język polski, zaznaczając, jak wpływa to na postrzeganie symbolu oraz postaci. Cała analiza kończy się podkreśleniem możliwości adaptacyjnych i ponadczasowości klasycznej literatury we współczesnych narracjach.

The aim of this work is to present the changes of symbolism of the scarlet letter ‘A’ in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and its modern movie adaptation Easy A. By comparing key aspects from both works, the study examines how the meaning of the letter ‘A’ evolves across different cultural and temporal contexts. The thesis is divided into two chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion. The first chapter describes a theoretical framework, discussing American Romanticism and its European roots, as well as themes of symbolism, feminist criticism, translation and adaptation theories. The second chapter offers an analytical comparison, focusing on the meaning of the scarlet letter in the novel and the film. It also addresses the challenges of audiovisual translation from English into Polish, highlighting how it affects the perception of the symbol and the characters. The whole study concludes by emphasising the adaptability and enduring relevance of classic literature in modern narratives.
