Analysis of Humour Translation in the Polish Subtitled and Voice-Over Versions of the American Series Chicago Fire

Niniejsza praca licencjacka została napisana w celu zbadania specyfiki przekładu audiowizualnego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tłumaczenia humoru na przykładzie serialu „Chicago Fire”. Struktura pracy opiera się na trzech głównych częściach. W pierwszym rozdziale omówiono definicję tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, jego historię, rodzaje oraz znaczenie we współczesnym świecie, jak również ograniczenia techniczne występujące w napisach filmowych oraz w wersji lektorskiej (voice-over). Druga część obejmuje wyjaśnienie mechanizmów i rodzajów humoru, a także technik stosowanych w procesie jego translacji. Ostatni rozdział stanowi analizę empiryczną wybranych odcinków 6. sezonu „Chicago Fire”. Badanie przeprowadzono na podstawie zestawionych w tabelach dialogów, analizując, jak tłumacze poradzili sobie z przełożeniem elementów komicznych w wersji z napisami oraz w wersji lektorskiej, z uwzględnieniem wykorzystanych technik i ich wpływu na ostateczny kształt humoru. Wyniki analizy wykazały, że w obu trybach tłumacze, próbując ominąć ograniczenia techniczne, stosowali techniki, które niekiedy uniemożliwiały adekwatne oddanie żartu. Należy jednak zaznaczyć, że wersja z napisami poradziła sobie z tym zadaniem zdecydowanie lepiej, w wielu przypadkach zachowując humorystyczny wydźwięk sytuacji. W wersji lektorskiej często omijano kluczowe elementy, co skutkowało znacznym osłabieniem lub całkowitym zanikiem humoru.

The purpose of this BA thesis is to investigate the specifics of audiovisual translation, focusing particularly on the translation of humour as exemplified by the TV series Chicago Fire. The structure of the thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter discusses the definition, history, and types of audiovisual translation, as well as its significance in the contemporary world and the technical constraints inherent to subtitling and voice-over. The second part explains the mechanisms and types of humour, along with the translation techniques applied in the process of its rendering. The final chapter presents an empirical analysis of selected episodes from the 6th season of Chicago Fire. The study is based on dialogue samples arranged in tables, examining how translators managed the transfer of comic elements in both subtitled and voice-over versions, while considering the techniques applied and their impact on the final form of humour. The results of the analysis indicate that in both modes, translators attempting to overcome technical constraints employed techniques that sometimes prevented an adequate rendition of the joke. However, it is worth noting that the subtitled version performed significantly better in this task, preserving the humorous undertone of the situations in many instances. Conversely, the voice-over version frequently omitted key elements, which resulted in the humour being substantially diminished or entirely lost.
