Analysis of a Polish Audiovisual Translation of the Film Inside Out and its Sequel Inside Out 2

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie tłumaczenia humoru w amerykańskim filmie animowanym „W głowie się nie mieści” oraz jego kontynuacji „W głowie się nie mieści 2”. Praca składa się z pięciu części. Część pierwsza zawiera informacje ogólne na temat przekładu audiowizualnego, uwzględniając jego definicję, historię oraz klasyfikację. W części drugiej poruszona zostaje kwestia humoru, a mianowicie jego zdefiniowania, wyzwań stojących przed tłumaczem, taksonomii oraz najczęściej przyjmowanych strategii tłumaczeniowych. Kolejna część stanowi natomiast krótki wstęp do tematyki filmu oraz przekazywanych przez niego treści, jak i współpracy dialogów, grafiki oraz dźwięku w omawianej produkcji. Dwie ostatnie części poświęcone są analizie większości występujących w filmie elementów humorystycznych. Analizie poddana jest wersja z polskimi napisami dialogowymi oraz polska wersja dubbingowa. Są one porównane z oryginalną wersją dubbingową w języku angielskim. Przykłady zostały podzielone ze względu na żarty międzynarodowe, zależne od języka, wizualne, złożone, kultury narodowej oraz narodowego poczucia humoru. W analizie uwzględnione zostały także elementy humorystyczne dodane przez tłumacza. Zwieńczeniem pracy, jednocześnie głównym celem analizy jest próba oceny przekładu audiowizualnego wspomnianego filmu animowanego i odpowiedź na pytanie, która wersja jest bliższa oryginałowi oraz która osiągnęła lepszy efekt humorystyczny.

This thesis is aimed at the analysis of the translation of humor in the American animated film “Inside Out” and its sequel “Inside Out 2”. The work consists of five parts. Part one contains background information on audiovisual translation, taking into account its definition, history and classification. The second part addresses the issue of humor, namely its definition, the challenges facing the translator, taxonomy and the most commonly adopted translation strategies. The next section, meanwhile, provides a brief introduction to the subject matter of the film and the content it conveys, as well as the description of collaboration of dialogue, graphics and sound in the production under discussion. The last two sections are devoted to analyzing most of the humorous elements present in the film. The version with Polish subtitles and the Polish dubbed version are analyzed. These are compared with the original dubbed version in English. The examples are divided according to international, language-dependent, visual, complex, national-culture-and-institution and national-sense-of-humor jokes. Humorous elements added by the translator were also included in the analysis. The culmination of the work, at the same time the main purpose of the analysis, is to try to evaluate the audiovisual translation of the aforementioned animated film and answer the question of which version is closer to the original and which achieved a better humorous effect.
