The subject of this article is a comparison of the perception of the Ruthenian voivodeship by the Lithuanian nobleman Jan Władysław Poczobut Odlanicki and travellers from Western and Southern Europe (French, Hungarian, Frisian, German and Irish). During the expedition in 1684, Poczobut visited several towns, including Rzeszów, Łańcut, Przeworsk, Jarosław, Lviv and Jaworów, where he managed to obtain from John III Sobieski title of the pantler of Oszmiana. His memoir, however, was not intended for publica-tion. Poczobut does not feel alien in Russia. He is interested in the same things as any traveler: cities, fortifi-cations and churches. He writes about them briefly, as they do not differ from what he knows from home. He provides the most detailed account of his stay in Jaworów, where he observed life at the royal court, admired the gardens, exotic animals and war trophies from Vienna, as these were the things that fascinated him the most. In contrast, foreign visitors to the same places describe them differently. They provided more detailed descriptions, often accompanied by elaborate explanations. What seemed ordinary for Poczobut, appeared new and exotic to them. When writing with the intention of publishing their memoirs, they also take into account the needs of their prospective readers. They occasionally viewed things with a sense of superiority, especially the French).
