W poszukiwaniu źródeł intuicji filozoficznych – nowe metody w filozofii eksperymentalnej

Rozprawa ma trzy główne cele: (1) pokazanie, że filozofia eksperymentalna może być używana do testowania filozoficznych intuicji tak, jak są one rozumiane przez większość współczesnych teorii intuicji, (2) przeanalizowanie tzw. „projektu źródłowego” pod względem jego celów, założeń i metod, (3) zbadanie, w jakim zakresie różne metody badawcze mogą być użyteczne w realizacji celów filozofii eksperymentalnej. W rozprawie przeciwstawiam się poglądowi, zgodnie z którym filozofia eksperymentalna nie może badać intuicji rozumianych w filozoficznie głęboki sposób. Twierdzę, że metody dominującej praktyki badawczej w filozofii eksperymentalnej rzeczywiście nie są odpowiednie do badania intuicji tak, jak są one charakteryzowane przez tradycyjne stanowiska. Pokazuję jednak, że metody badawcze filozofii eksperymentalnej mogą zostać przysotosowane i uzupełnione w ten sposób, by mogła ona zajmować się intuicjami filozoficznymi. Rekonstruuję również założenia projektu źródłowego, którego ostatecznym zadaniem jest przeprowadzenie w naturalistyczny sposób oceny wartości filozoficznych intuicji jako świadectw. Filozofowie pracujący w tym paradygmacie po pierwsze stawiają sobie za cel tworzenie „demaskatorskich” wyjaśnień intuicji filozoficznych („obietnica negatywna”), a po drugie wykazanie, że pewne z nich są uprawnione („obietnica pozytywna”). Współczesne prace w obrębie projektu źródłowego skoncentrowane są głównie na obietnicy negatywnej. W pracy wykazuję, po pierwsze, że realizacja obietnicy pozytywnej rodzi epistemologiczne i metodologiczne wyzwania, po drugie, że wykorzystywane dotychczas przez projekt źródłowy strategie argumentacyjne są do jej spełnienia niewystarczajace i po trzecie wreszcie, że projekt źródłowy powinien zostać uzupełniony, aby umożliwić jej realizację. W ostatniej kolejności omawiam różne metody badawcze, które są lub mogłyby zostać wykorzystane w filozofii eksperymentalnejdo badania intuicji. Przedstawiam metody kwestionariuszowe i ich krytykę. Analizuję cztery grupy nowych metod: metody językoznawstwa korpusowego, metody jakościowe, metody behawioralne i podejścia wykorzystujące interaktywne media, takie jak gry komputerowe i wirtualna rzeczywistość. Aby zilustrować użyteczność tych podejść badawczych dla eksperymentalnej filozofii, przedstawiam przykłady własnych badań empirycznych, które z nich korzystają w celu przyjrzenia się filozoficznie istotnym zagadnieniom.

This thesis has three major aims: (1) to show that experimental philosophy can in principle be used to test philosophical intuitions as they are conceived on a wide variety of contemporary theories of intuitions, (2) to analyze the so-called ”sources project” in particular in terms of its aims, assumptions, and methods, (3) to investigate the extent to which a variety of different research methods can be useful in realizing the goals of experimental philosophy. I argue against the received view according to which experimental philosophy cannot study intuitions in a philosophically deep sense. I show that the prevalent research practice of experimental philosophy is indeed not properly equipped to investigate intuitions as they are characterized by traditional accounts. However, I argue that the research methods of experimental philosophy can be adapted and supplemented so as to test such intuitions. I reconstruct ”the sources project” whose ultimate goal is to evaluate the evidential value of philosophical intuitions in a naturalistic manner. I distinguish between two goals of the sources project. One goal is to offer ”debunking” explanations of philosophical intuitions (”negative promise”), the other is to show that some philosophical intuitions may be warranted (”positive promise”). Current work in the sources project is devoted to the negative promise. I argue, first, that the realization of the positive promise poses different methodological and epistemological challenges; second, that the argumentative strategies currently deployed by the sources project are insufficient for the realization of the positive promise; and third, how the sources project should be supplemented to enable it to realize the positive promise. Finally, I discuss various research methods that are or could be used in experimental philosophy. I discuss the questionnaire method and its criticisms. I also analyze four groups of novel methods: methods of corpus linguistics, qualitative methods, behavioral methods and approaches employing interactive media such as computer games and virtual reality. I evaluate their virtues as well as shortcomings. To illustrate the usefulness of these approaches for experimental philosophy, I also present examples of original empirical research that employs these methods to investigate philosophically important topics.
