A Comparative Analysis of Polish and German Translations of the 1992 Animated Film Aladdin

Poniższa praca zatytułowana “Analiza porównawcza polskiego i niemieckiego filmu animowanego Aladdin z 1992 roku” podejmuje zjawisko tłumaczenia dubbingowego w różnych wersjach językowych, w tym przypadku uwzględniając wersję polską oraz niemiecką. W oparciu o oryginalną wersję językową zajmuje się zjawiskiem tłumaczenia, strategii tłumaczeniowych w materiałach audiowizualnych oraz strategiami podejmowanym podczas tłumaczenia humoru oraz gier słownych w filmach animowanych. Głównym elementem pracy jest analiza porównawcza wybranych treści z filmu z 1992 roku z polskiej oraz niemieckiej wersji dubbingowej w oparciu o oryginalne wypowiedzi postaci. W pracy poddano analizie również zagadnienia takie jak podejście do tłumaczenia tytułu, nazw własnych oraz nawiązań kulturowych zarówno w wersji oryginalnej jak i przekładach. Praca podzielona została na dwa rozdziały. W pierwszej części – teoretycznej – skupiono się na aspektach dotyczących historii tłumaczenia, strategii tłumaczeniowych oraz podejściach do przekładu humoru oraz aspektów kulturowych. Dodatkowo uwzględnione zostało wprowadzenie do filmu oraz historii filmu Disneya Aladdin (1992) Część druga – praktyczna – skupia się na analizie porównawczej wybranych przykładów w trzech wersjach językowych w formie metody jakościowej. Przedstawione zostały różnice oraz podobieństwa pomiędzy oryginałem a wersją polską oraz niemiecką a także poszczególne różnice w podejściu do tłumaczenia wersji polskiej oraz niemieckiej. W szczególności skupiono się również na humorze przedstawionym za pomocą postaci drugoplanowych. Analiza porównawcza w jasny sposób pokazała, że tłumacze w odmienny, jednakże ciekawy i kreatywny sposób podeszli do tłumaczenia zarówno pojedynczych fragmentów jak i całych odniesień kulturowych przedstawionych w oryginale.

The following thesis entitled “A Comparative Analysis of Polish and German Translations of the 1992 Animated Film Aladdin” deals with the phenomenon of dubbing translation in different language versions, in this case considering the Polish and German versions. Based on the original language version, the paper deals with the phenomenon of translation, translation strategies in audiovisual materials, ways of audiovisual translation and strategies undertaken when translating humour and wordplays in animated films. The main element of the study is a comparative analysis of selected passages from the film in Polish and German dubbed versions based on the original utterances. The paper also analyses issues such as the approach to the translation of the title, proper names and cultural references in both original version and the translations. The work is divided into two chapters, the work, in the first, theoretical, part focuses on aspects of the history of translation, translation strategies, types of audiovisual translation and approaches in translating humour and cultural references. In addition, an introduction to the film and the history of the Disney film Aladdin (1992) has been included. Part two – practical – focuses on the comparative analysis of selected examples in three language versions in the form of a qualitative method. The differences and similarities between the original and the Polish and German versions are presented, as well as individual differences in the approach to the translation of the Polish and German versions. Particular focus was also given to the humour depicted through supporting characters. The comparative analysis clearly showed that the translators often took a different, yet interesting and creative approach to the translation of both individual utterances and entire cultural references hidden in the original.
