Translation of English honorifics in subtitling: a comparative analysis of Polish and German subtitles in the TV series Downton Abbey

Głównym zagadnieniem niniejszej pracy są strategie tłumaczeniowe używane przy przekładzie angielskich form grzecznościowych na języki polski oraz niemiecki w napisach, na przykładzie serialu telewizyjnego Downton Abbey. Celem badania jest ustalenie, do jakiego stopnia podejście polskie oraz niemieckie różnią się od siebie oraz jaki mogą mieć wpływ na odbiór tekstu docelowego. Podstawę teoretyczną stanowi przede wszystkim klasyfikacja strategii tłumaczeniowych Hejwowskiego, przy czym została ona uzupełniona analizą kluczowych strategii tłumaczeniowych charakterystycznych dla napisów na podstawie opracowania Diaza Cintasa i Remael oraz współczesnych wytycznych tworzenia napisów. Przedmiot analizy ograniczono do jednego odcinka serialu – odcinka 9. sezonu 4. Dane zebrano za pomocą ręcznej transkrypcji fragmentów angielskiej ścieżki dialogowej zawierających formy grzecznościowe oraz odpowiadających im napisów polskich i niemieckich, spisanych odpowiednio z serwisów streamingowych Amazon Prime Video oraz Disney Plus. Badanie ma charakter studium przypadku wybranych przykładów dla poszczególnych angielskich form grzecznościowych. Wyniki pokazują, że niemieckie i polskie podejścia do tłumaczenia tych zwrotów znacząco się od siebie różnią. Niemiecki tekst docelowy zawiera więcej przypadków zastosowania transferu bezpośredniego, zaś polski – więcej uznanych ekwiwalentów. W konsekwencji napisy niemieckie mogą zdawać się widzowi bardziej obce, natomiast polskie zapewniają większą przystępność i płynność odbioru. Podsumowując, choć uzyskane wyniki odnoszą się do konkretnego materiału badawczego, mogą zapewnić szczegółowy wgląd w przekład angielskich form grzecznościowych na polski oraz niemiecki – zagadnienie lingwistyczne, które w znacznym stopniu pozostawało dotychczas słabo zbadane.

The primary concern of this thesis is the translation strategies used to translate English honorifics into Polish and into German in the context of subtitling on the example of the TV series Downton Abbey. The study aims to determine to what extent the Polish and the German approaches are dissimilar and what effect they might have on the reception of the target text. The theoretical foundation is essentially built upon Hejwowski’s classification of translation strategies, supplemented by discussion of key translation strategies applicable specifically to subtitling as proposed by Diaz Cintas and Remael, as well as modern subtitling guidelines. The scope of the analysis is limited to one episode of the series – episode 9 of season 4. The data was collected through a manual transcription of English dialogue lines containing honorifics and their equivalent Polish and German subtitles, reproduced from the Amazon Prime Video and the Disney Plus streaming services, respectively. The study is designed as a case study of selected examples for each English honorific or pair of honorifics. The findings reveal that the Polish and the German approaches to the translation differ significantly, with the German target text containing more instances of transfer without explanation, and the Polish translation utilising more recognised equivalents. Thus, the German subtitles might appear more foreign to the viewer, while the Polish ones may offer a greater fluidity in reading. In conclusion, while the results are specific to this particular dataset, they might offer a nuanced insight into the translation of English honorifics into Polish and German, a linguistic phenomenon which has remained largely underexamined.
