Koszty utrzymania w podróży Williama Breretona po Niderlandach i Wyspach Brytyjskich (1634-1635). Studium z zakresu ekonomicznych aspektów podróży we wczesnonowożytnej Europie.

Praca stanowi próbę analizy kosztów utrzymania ponoszonych przez Williama Breretona podczas jego podróży po Niderlandach oraz Wyspach Brytyjskich w latach 1634–1635. Jej celem było określenie struktury wydatków podróżnika, ich zmienności w czasie i przestrzeni oraz porównanie poziomu cen i jakości usług w obu regionach. Punktem wyjścia dla badań jest dziennik podróży, który stanowi podstawowe źródło do odtworzenia charakteru i rytmu wyprawy oraz warunków gospodarczych panujących w odwiedzanych miejscach. W pierwszej części pracy omówiono źródło, sylwetkę autora oraz miejsce badań nad historią cen i podróży w historiografii, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dorobku Antoniego Mączaka. Drugą część otwierają uwagi metodyczne dotyczące narzędzi badawczych oraz założeń sformułowanych na potrzeby analizy źródła. Należą do nich wprowadzone kategorie analizy porównawczej, uwagi dotyczące wartości liczbowych oraz założenia metodyczne zaczerpnięte z literatury przedmiotu. W dwóch kolejnych podrozdziałach przedstawiono rozważania dotyczące wydatków podróżnika w dwóch wyróżnionych regionach: Niderlandach i Wyspach Brytyjskich. Analiza koncentruje się na identyfikacji charakteru, specyfiki i dynamiki podróży poprzez ocenę jej aspektów ekonomicznych, przejawiających się w ponoszonych kosztach, które zmieniały się zarówno w czasie, jak i przestrzeni. Ostatnia część analizy poświęcona jest porównaniu poziomu cen oraz jakości usług między odwiedzonymi regionami. Zestawienie wybranych kategorii wydatków ma na celu ukazanie różnic w uwarunkowaniach gospodarczych poszczególnych terenów. W tej części dokonano także weryfikacji hipotez Antoniego Mączaka dotyczących terytoriów omawianych w pracy. W zakończeniu sformułowano najważniejsze wnioski płynące z analizy źródła, oceniono materiał badawczy, wskazano problemy metodologiczne oraz zaproponowano kierunki dalszych badań.

This work attempts to analyze the living expenses incurred by William Brereton during his travels through the Netherlands and the British Isles in the years 1634–1635. Its aim was to determine the structure of the traveler’s expenditures, their variability over time and space, and to compare the price levels and quality of services in both regions. The starting point for the research is the travel journal, which serves as the primary source for reconstructing the character and rhythm of the journey as well as the economic conditions prevailing in the visited locations. The first part of the work discusses the source, the author’s profile, and the place of research on the history of prices and travel within historiography, with particular emphasis on the contributions of Antoni Mączak. The second part opens with methodological remarks concerning the research tools and assumptions formulated for the purpose of source analysis. These include introduced categories of comparative analysis, notes on numerical values, and methodological assumptions derived from the relevant literature. In the following two subsections, considerations regarding the traveler’s expenditures in two distinguished regions—the Netherlands and the British Isles—are presented. The analysis focuses on identifying the character, specificity, and dynamics of the journey through an assessment of its economic aspects, manifested in the costs incurred, which varied both over time and across locations. The final part of the analysis is devoted to comparing the price levels and quality of services between the visited regions. The summary of selected expenditure categories aims to highlight differences in the economic conditions of the respective areas. This section also includes a verification of Antoni Mączak’s hypotheses concerning the territories discussed in the work. The conclusion formulates the key findings arising from the source analysis, evaluates the research material, points out methodological issues, and proposes directions for further study.
