Queerowe aspekty amerykańskiego malarstwa pierwszej połowy XX wieku – wybrane przykłady

Praca poświęcona jest identyfikacji i analizie motywów queerowych, które pojawiły się w 1. połowie XX wieku na przykładzie pięciu amerykańskich malarzy. Po wymienieniu obranych metodologii, zostaną podane definicje słowa queer oraz to, jak jego znaczenie zmieniało się na przestrzeni wieków. Stan badań obejmuje przytoczenie powstałych biografii o wybranych artystach takich jak: Joseph Christian Leyendecker, Romaine Brooks, Marsden Hartley, Charles Demuth i Paul Cadmus oraz wspomnienie o publikacjach na temat historii sztuki homoseksualnej/queerowej. Pojawiają się również dzieła z zakresu socjologii, badające dzieje społeczności queer, również w kontekście konkretnych par lub jednostek. Kolejna część obejmuje skrócone biografie wyżej wymienionych malarzy, co stanowi aspekt konieczny do zrozumienia ich twórczości. Następna część pracy podzielona jest na sześć rozdziałów na podstawie tematyki dzieł. Każdy wizerunek jest dokładnie opisane, a następnie przeanalizowane pod kątem obranych środków wyrazu, elementów queerowego kodu wizualnego, a w niektórych przypadkach również biografii artysty. Praca zakończona jest podsumowaniem, spisem ilustracji oraz użytą bibliografią.

The following paper is dedicated to the identification and analysis of queer motifs present in the first half of the 20th Century based on the example of five American painters. After naming the chosen methodologies, there will be provided definitions of the word ‘queer’ and how its meaning has changed over the centuries. The research data part mentions the biographies of the chosen artists, such as Joseph Christian Leyendecker, Romaine Brooks, Mardsen Hartley, Charles Demuth, and Paul Cadmus, as well as the publications about the homosexual/queer art history. There are also numbered works from the sociology field investigating the history of the queer community, including the context of the particular individuals or couples. The next part includes the shortened biographies of the mentioned artists, which are a crucial aspect of understanding their work. The next part is divided into six chapters based on the artworks’ subjects. Every painting is precisely described and analysed in terms of the chosen media of expression, elements of the visual queer code, and in some cases the biography of the artist. The paper is finalised with the conclusions, the list of illustrations, and the references.
