The Shōwa period (1926-1989), era of Enlightened Peace, spanned 63 years and was the longest reign by one emperor in Japanese history. Within one period Japan underwent numerous and drastic changes. The era began with severe economic crisis, followed by the impact of World War II, giving way to experiencing the heyday of the Japanese bubble economy by the end. Chanoyu, woven into the fabric of Japanese history and culture was along for the ride. The tea practitioners who were setting the tone of Shōwa era chanoyu were first sukisha, businessmen and enterpreneurs, collectors sensitive to matters of cultural heritage. From the '40s the focus changed to chanoyu of the tea schools – Tea Families and Households. Contemporary tea practitioners come from all walks of life, many of them from beyond Japanese borders. Tea practice, as it has done since its beginings, is evolving. In my article I argue that although times and conditions change, the Shōwa period chanoyu history is undoubtedly relevant today and vivid in the background of how chanoyu is perceived by contemporary participants in this art.
