Szczegółowym celem rozprawy jest opis strategii eksperymentalnego, nowatorskiego i oryginalnego przetwarzania tych form w utworach pięciu pisarzy: Edwarda Redlińskiego, Leopolda Buczkowskiego, Doroty Masłowskiej, Tadeusza Różewicza i Mirona Białoszewskiego. Tworzywem transformacji nieliterackiej mowy są zasadniczo formy języka użytkowego, potocznego, niezgodnego z normą polszczyzny literackiej: poprawnej, wzorcowej i neutralnej; zwłaszcza w jej wysokoartystycznym wariancie. Wielość tych grup i środowisk literackich uświadamia ponadpartykularny zakres i historycznoliteracką wagę ekspansji form nieliterackich w polskiej literaturze poodwilżowej.

The present work – The Literariness of Non-Literary Forms in Polish Literature after 1956 – concerns the phenomenon of the rising popularity of non-artistic forms of expression in Polish literary output after the “Polish thaw”; namely the expansion of texts that are functional, colloquial or do not follow the norm of correct, standard and neutral literary Polish language; particularly in its high-art variant. The work’s specific objective is to describe three strategies of experimental, radical and original processing of non-artistic language. They are discussed in my interpretation of works by five writers: Edward Redliński, Leopold Buczkowski, Dorota Masłowska, Tadeusz Różewicz and Miron Białoszewski. The scope of non-literary language forms has been wide and historically changing: it includes both functional texts and single fragments or characteristics of non-artistic utterances, e.g. short excerpts from advertisements and newspapers, colloquial set phrases, elements of functional styles, e.g. petrified phrases found in office style, paralanguage phenomena, quotes from overheard “other’s speech” (Mikhail Bakhtin’s term) as well as conventionalized behavior patterns or conversational customs. Ways of using non-literary forms in literature do not come down to citations. In this kind of creative process non-literary forms are being separated from real context (or fabricated according to the rules of colloquial speech or written functional language), processed and (re)used in the literary work as linguistic found objects or as part of artistic recycling. Sometimes it involves a radical interference into non-literary forms, which means breaking these forms, their deformation, free joining of elements of separate texts, their layering over e with non-literary forms, it radically changes literary language’s meaning, scope, form and material, while also redefining the notion of literature and literariness. In these texts literariness is not an immanent aesthetic quality of separate works, but rather arises between the texts. It results from the idea for its composition, as a function of devices which aim at showing contrasts, inconsistencies, incongruities, caricature quality of juxtaposed works, genre forms, conventions, styles. The subject, in turn, does not create the effect of literariness ex nihilo, just by arranging words, but rather recognizes poetic quality in another person’s non-artistic text; (s)he is the one who peeps, eavesdrops, extracts artistic potential: beyond, in meeting, in context, in contrast of various (elements of) utterances. Literariness moves the aim and scope of its activity from the level of style to the level of stylization, from the level of narration to the level of constructional actions aiming at arranging finished text fragments. In most cases linguistic artifacts, devoid of narrative cement, speak for themselves as it were, and the subjective activity is formed in the very function of the word’s use, revealing the works’ meta-artistic concept. In my work I show three dominating strategies of processing non-literary language in Polish literature after 1956: a) contrast which involves composing finished functional texts or larger fragments thereof; b) deforming non-literary forms of expression, which consists in condensing negative linguistic phenomena in the work, and c) dismantling non-literary (and literary) utterances, their forms, scope, shapes, continuity, coherence, exposing the processual dimension of creating literary works and other utterances, including non-literary forms. Each of these three strategies (contrast, deformation, dismantling) is matched by a specific artistic technique. Contrast is based on composition technique, deformation on condensation, dismantling on devices that expose the processuality of creation. To describe these strategies in greater detail – the first mechanism of literariness, contrast, consists in arranging artistic compositions with the use of finished functional texts. The goal of their processing is disautomatization of meaning resulting from changing the context of the word’s use. Literariness in such works arises between finished texts or fragments of utterances, it results from the idea for their composition, it is formulated in meeting, in context, in contrast of various (elements of) utterances. The authors of literary compositions based on the contrast strategy use finished functional forms that they include in literary works as found objects or isolated, thematically, stylistically and pragmatically independent sentences arranged in a diverse dialogue of distinct entities excluded from the communicative community. Examples of the contrast strategy in my work are Edward Redliński’s Nikiformy and Leopold Buczkowski’s Uroda na czasie. The second strategy of literary processing of non-literary forms is deformation which involves condensing negative values, meanings and content, their hyperbolization and distortion kept in the poetics of linguistic grotesque and based on the mechanism of parody. These devices aim at exposing negative intentions, attitudes and behaviors that can be observed in the language, patterns of linguistic self-presentation, linguistic manipulations, but also to show how formulas of official speech spread to private language. The strategy of deformation is discussed in my interpretation of Dorota Masłowska’s experimental prose (Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą białoczerwoną, Paw królowej, Inni ludzie). In my perspective, the tendency for deformation is also characteristic for works by Leopold Buczkowski and Tadeusz Różewicz, however basic strategies of transforming non-literary forms in their works are (as it can be assumed) contrast and dismantling respectively. The role of the third literary strategy, dismantling, is to reveal the processuality of forming utterances: oral and written, functional and literary, which allows to examine the works in the history of their development and reaching their final form. In this case, the creative process reflects the mechanisms of perception, emphasizing intended scrappiness, chaos or disintegration of various forms of expression, growing in an unpredictable direction. Dismantled texts lose their boundaries, so meanings crystallize outside their frame, in mutual relation between interlaced fragments of various texts, but also beyond language, in the space in between text and non-artistic imagery (in late poems of Tadeusz Różewicz) and between text and non-artistic sound in the oeuvre of Białoszewski. The chapter devoted to this poet concerns his recordings and so called sound poems from various periods of his work. In the chaper on Różewicz, apart from his late poems, I also analyze the collage-work Tarcza z pajęczyny. These three models of literariness are presented in the same order that I discuss them in my work, according to the degree of the processing of non-literary phenomena. The contrast mechanism which is based on composition, assumes playing with meanings of larger (as well as complete) forms of expression with the use of context alone. The mechanism of grotesque deformation, in turn, involves interference in the form of expression itself. At the same time, it is a transitional form between the mechanism of contrastive composition and the mechanism of dismantling, emphasizing the process and disintegration. It combines features of these two strategies: elements of language that are subject to deformation form a composition which determines their nature through relations occuring between its elements. The deformation mechanism is also based on devices indicating dismantling, emphasizing the process and disintegration of forms of expression. In turn, dismantled utterances, captured in the process of creation, while retaining the discontinous dynamics of everyday thinking, show their form: chaotic, imperfect (and thus prone to exaggeration). The third mechanism concerns utterances that are the most processed, for they are deformed, broken into pieces, abstracted not only from the original context of use, but also from the framework of literary work which could potentially unite them. The work also aims at depicting the artistic and sociopolitical contexts of this phenomena, showing their causes and effects. Experimenting with non-literary language is a manifestation of the general tendency of increased interest in non-artistic language in post-thaw Polish literature. It is true for many independent, singular authors, but also for representatives of such circles as the Współczesność generation, the linguistic poets, the New Wave poets, authors from the so called “artistic revolution” group, poets from the O’Hara faction of bruLion, Silesian brutalists or younger, still active authors that use non-artistic language. The multitude of these groups and literary circles show supra-individual range and historico-literary significance of the expansion on non-literary forms in Polish literature after the thaw. Striving for innovation and experiment, regarding language with growing suspicion, focusing on its tendency to petrification – typical for the authors I described in my work – allows, in turn, to see their work as a continuation of modernist tendencies. Processing non-literary forms in literature performs a function which is aesthetic, but also critical, revealing, interventionist. Its role is, in large measure, to expose and problematize mechanisms that can be observed in language: those of (collective) thinking; representations, aspirations and (social and individual) complexes which hide behind fixed forms of expression. Through disautomatizing these conventionalized phrases, the authors throw language off its original propagandist, persuasive, culture-forming functions that determine the sense of political or social community. In this – indirect – way literature has depicted reality and reacted to the discursive oppression of public language in various periods of contemporary history.
