The use of anachronisms in selected British and American musicals from the perspective of the incongruity-resolution theory of humour

Tematem pracy jest użycie anachronizmów w musicalach. Głównym celem jest sprawdzenie, w jaki sposób elementy anachroniczne wpływają na humor i zaangażowanie publiczności. Dokonano analizy przykładów anachronizmów użytych w dwóch musicalach, Six i Something Rotten. Jako tło teoretyczne wykorzystano teorię rozwiązywania niespójności, która została omówiona i porównana z innymi teoriami humoru w pierwszym rozdziale, w którym wprowadzono także pojęcia niespójności i anachronizmu. W drugim rozdziale przedstawiono musical jako gatunek wraz z jego historią. Trzeci rozdział skupia się na metodologii i opisuje materiały wykorzystane w pracy, czyli dwa wybrane musicale. Przykłady anachronizmów z tych musicali przedstawiono i omówiono w czwartym rozdziale, a w piątym wyniki porównano pod kątem podobieństw i różnic. Analizie poddano teksty piosenek, libretto i wizualne elementy wybranych musicali. Wyniki wskazują, że użyte w nich językowe i wizualne anachronizmy skutecznie przyczyniają się do budowania efektu poprzez zestawienie elementów historycznych i współczesnych. Te techniki wykorzystujące anachronizmy, zgodnie z teorią rozwiązywania niespójności, pokazują, jak nieoczekiwane kontrasty mogą pełnić funkcję humorystyczną. Wnioski wskazują, że anachronizmy mogą pozytywnie wpłynąć na humor i zaangażowanie widzów. Badanie dostarcza twórcom musicali i badaczom informacji na temat skutecznego wykorzystania anachronizmów.

This thesis focuses on the use of anachronisms in musicals. The primary aim is to examine how anachronistic elements function to generate humour and engage audiences, on the basis of the examples from Six and Something Rotten. Incongruity-resolution theory was used as the theoretical background, and it was discussed and compared with other theories of humour in the first chapter, in which the concepts of incongruity and anachronism were also introduced. The second chapter provides an overview of a musical as a genre along with its history. The third chapter focuses on methodology and describes the materials used in the thesis, namely two selected musicals. Examples of anachronisms from these musicals are presented and discussed in the fourth chapter and in the fifth chapter, they are compared in terms of similarities and differences. This study employs an analysis of the script, lyrics, and performance elements of those musicals. The findings indicate that linguistic and visual anachronisms in Six and Something Rotten are used effectively to create humour through the juxtaposition of historical and modern elements. These techniques utilising anachronisms align with the incongruity-resolution theory, demonstrating how unexpected contrasts can resolve into humorous interpretations. This study concludes that anachronisms can enhance the comedic and engaging qualities of musical theatre. The research provides insights for musical creators and scholars on the effective use of anachronisms.
