Translation of neologisms in Wicked: a comparative analysis of the Polish and French dubbing

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza neologizmów występujących w dialogach filmu Wicked (2024) oraz porównanie ich tłumaczeń w polskiej i francuskiej wersji dubbingowej. Dwa początkowe rozdziały o charakterze teoretycznym przybliżają kolejno specyfikę dubbingu oraz zagadnienie neologizmów. Rozdział trzeci, stanowiący część empiryczną, poświęcono analizie zakresu odtworzenia lub pominięcia neologizmów w przekładzie. Obejmuje on badanie budowy i znaczenia neologizmów zarówno w wersji oryginalnej, jak i w obu językach docelowych, co stanowi punkt wyjścia do identyfikacji konkretnych technik tłumaczeniowych. W pracy uwzględniono również uwarunkowania techniczne dubbingu i wpływ decyzji przekładowych na jakość ostatecznego produktu audiowizualnego. Przeprowadzone badanie wykazało, że zdecydowana większość neologizmów została pomyślnie odtworzona w obu wersjach językowych, a sam dubbing zachował najwyższą jakość. Dowodzi to, że pomimo restrykcji technicznych wpisanych w proces tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, jakim jest dubbing, nowoutworzone autorskie formy leksykalne mogą zostać skutecznie przetłumaczone przy zachowaniu ich nowatorskiego charakteru.

The aim of this study is to analyse the neologisms featured in the dialogue of the musical film Wicked (2024) and to compare their translations in the Polish and French dubbed versions. The first two chapters serve as an introduction to the topic of dubbing and neologisms respectively. The third chapter concerns the research itself, exploring whether the neologisms are either recreated or lost in translation. It includes an examination of their structure and meaning in both the source text and the two target languages, which then provides the basis for identifying specific translation techniques. The study also takes into account the technical constraints of dubbing, as well as the impact of translation choices on the quality of the audiovisual products. The results show that the vast majority of neologisms were successfully recreated in both language versions, while the dubbing itself maintained a high level of quality. This suggests that, despite the technical constraints inherent in dubbing, authorial neologisms can be effectively translated while preserving their innovative character.
